Gyokeres The Hero As Sweden Beat Poland 3-2 In World Cup Playoff

Viktor Gyokeres struck an 88th-minute winner as Sweden beat Poland 3-2 in a dramatic World Cup qualification play-off in Stockholm, sealing a place at the tournament in North America and ending the visitors’ hopes after a match in which Sweden twice lost the lead before finally edging through.

The deciding moment came late, after Sweden survived heavy pressure. Lucas Bergvall saw a shot beaten away by Kamil Grabara, Besfort Zeneli then hit the inside of the post, and when the ball stayed in play, Gyokeres reacted quickest to score and send Sweden into Group F with the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia.

The contest swung throughout the night. Sweden went ahead twice, yet Poland levelled on each occasion and threatened to turn the tie around. Jakub Kaminski and Nicola Zalewski combined with Karol Swiderski after half-time for 2-2, before Poland applied sustained pressure, forcing Victor Lindelof into a crucial goal-line clearance from a Sebastian Szymanski corner.

Earlier, Sweden had set the tone with bright attacking play. Daniel Svensson missed a clear headed chance, but the breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute. Yasin Ayari produced a clever backheel into space and Anthony Elanga drove a fierce left-footed strike in off the underside of the bar, leaving Grabara with no chance.

Poland responded before the interval. Kristoffer Nordfeldt first kept Sweden in front with a sharp stop to deny Swiderski, yet the equaliser followed on 33 minutes. Zalewski cut inside from the left and curled a low shot towards the far corner; Nordfeldt reached it with one hand, but the ball still crept in.

Sweden restored the advantage on the stroke of half-time from a set piece. Benjamin Nygren delivered an inswinging free-kick from the right, Gustaf Lagerbielke attacked it aggressively, beat Grabara to the ball and guided a header into the net. Poland, however, came out refreshed, and ten minutes into the second half they struck again.

Matty Cash overlapped on the right and whipped a low cross beyond the near post. Kaminski flicked it towards the back stick, Zalewski recycled the ball first time, and Swiderski finished from close range. That goal gave Poland momentum, and Sweden’s relief was clear when Lindelof hooked Szymanski’s curling corner away from the line.

The play-off success carried extra meaning for Sweden. Sweden had only reached one of the previous four World Cups and lost to Poland in the play-offs for Qatar 2022. This time, Graham Potter’s side advanced despite finishing bottom of Group B in qualifying, without a win and with Gyokeres failing to score in four group matches.

Gyokeres then transformed Sweden’s campaign in the knockout phase, scoring a hat-trick against Ukraine in the semi-final before adding the decisive strike here, making it four goals in two play-off games. Sweden also managed qualification without injured forwards Alexander Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, underlining the impact of Gyokeres and the depth available to Potter.

Team Shots Shots on target Expected goals (xG)
Sweden 9 5 1.71
Poland 15 7 0.97

Poland finished with more attempts and efforts on target, yet Sweden produced the clearer openings, reflected in the higher xG value. Gyokeres had only one shot all evening, but that effort carried an xG of 0.71 as Gyokeres outmuscled Przemyslaw Wisniewski before prodding in, and Sweden left the pitch feeling the win was just about merited.

Sweden now look ahead to facing the Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia in Group F after a tense route through the play-offs. The victory over Poland ended recent disappointment in qualification, provided a measure of revenge for 2022 and confirmed Potter’s side as one of Europe’s representatives in North America.
