Szoboszlai On Liverpool Future: Contract Talks Continue As Player Refuses To Commit

Dominik Szoboszlai admits any decision on a new Liverpool contract lies away from personal control, despite strong form this season and ongoing discussions over fresh terms at Anfield for the Hungary international midfielder.

The 25-year-old currently has a deal running until 2028, yet negotiations over an extension have stalled. Reports in England say Liverpool opened talks earlier in the campaign, but Szoboszlai explains that there has been no concrete movement from the club’s side so far.

Asked where discussions stand, Szoboszlai offered a blunt assessment of the situation. "Nothing yet, to be honest, he said when asked for an update. From now on,it is not in my hands. It works this way. There is no progression, but if the right offer comes, then let's see." That response underlines the uncertainty around the next step.

Despite that, Szoboszlai underlined a clear wish to remain with Liverpool and spoke warmly about daily life at the club. "Let's see what happens. Hopefully, everyone will be happy at the end. Of course [I want to stay]. I like the city, I like the club, I like playing with these guys, I love Anfield, I love the fans. Let's see what the future holds."

The midfielder has been one of Liverpool’s key contributors across competitions this season. Szoboszlai has scored eight goals and supplied seven assists, while also posing a constant threat from distance, which has strengthened Liverpool’s attack in tight Premier League and cup matches.

Analytics highlight Szoboszlai’s influence from outside the area. No player in the Premier League has attempted more shots from long range this term, with 34 efforts. Szoboszlai also records the highest proportion of strikes from distance among players with at least 25 shots, taking 34 of 46 attempts, a rate of 74%.

Szoboszlai insists there is more to come. "I am the type of guy whereit is never enough for me. I can always be better and better, so there is no limit up there. I would like to get as many goals as I can, as many assists and win as many trophies as possible. That's my plan."

Beyond attacking output, Szoboszlai has also covered defensive gaps. With Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong unavailable through injury, Liverpool used Szoboszlai at right-back at times, including the 4-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at Anfield on 31 January 2026.

Szoboszlai does not see that switch as a permanent move. "It's not long-term, not even medium-term to be honest, in my head, he said of the position change. As I've said before, I'm a midfielder and, hopefully, our right-back is going to come back from injury, and I can get back in the middle. But if the team needs me, or the coach needs me there, I will play and try to give my best. But now Wata [Endo] is ready to play, Curtis [Jones] is also ready to play there, so we have quite a few options now."

For now, Szoboszlai remains central to Liverpool’s plans on the pitch, while the contract picture off it waits for movement. The midfielder’s production, versatility, and stated wish to stay ensure any future decision will carry significant weight for Liverpool’s medium-term squad planning.
