Szoboszlai In Talks With Liverpool Over New Contract Amid Strong Form

Dominik Szoboszlai confirms ongoing contract discussions with Liverpool, while delivering influential performances this season. No decision has been made, and he remains focused on helping the team as talks progress.

Dominik Szoboszlai confirmed that contract talks with Liverpool are under way, yet stressed nothing is final. The midfielder said discussions continue while Liverpool chase consistency in the Premier League and Champions League. Szoboszlai underlined a desire to focus on performances first, before any agreement on an extended stay at Anfield.

Liverpool’s season has been uneven in domestic and European competition so far. In the Premier League, Arne Slot’s team sit 14 points behind leaders Arsenal, weakening their title defence. In the Champions League, Liverpool are ninth overall before travelling to face Marseille on Wednesday in a key away fixture.

Szoboszlai eyes Liverpool contract extension

Szoboszlai’s current Liverpool contract runs until June 2028, though the 25-year-old is willing to commit for longer. The midfielder explained that negotiations are active but not settled, while form on the pitch remains Szoboszlai’s main concern. There is no deadline yet for any announcement, and both parties continue conversations.

When asked about the situation, Szoboszlai outlined the state of play in clear terms. "There is always progress but no decision has been made and I'll just keep on going every week, every training, giving my best for the team, for the fans," Szoboszlai said when asked about his contract negotiations. "Let's see what is going to happen in the future. There are always talks."

Szoboszlai then reflected on the attention around the negotiations and the wider context. "You guys in the media make a lot for the [public] and you keep on going because that's our job but there has been talks but for sure not any decision has been made. Of course I am happy here but you know how football works and that is something everybody has to take into account."

On the pitch, Szoboszlai has been central to Liverpool’s attacking play this season. Across all competitions, Szoboszlai has 11 goal contributions, with six goals and five assists. Only Hugo Ekitike, with 15 goal involvements, has more. Szoboszlai also shares the top assist tally with Florian Wirtz so far.

Team form has improved in recent weeks, with Liverpool unbeaten in 12 matches in all competitions. That run includes six wins and six draws. However, history suggests a test in France. Liverpool have won once in their last six away games against French clubs, although that victory came 1-0 at Paris Saint-Germain in March 2025.

Marseille also carry their own challenging record into Wednesday’s Champions League meeting. The French side have lost the last three Champions League matches against Liverpool. Those defeats include two games in the 2008-09 group stage, ending 2-1 to Liverpool in Marseille and 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield. Both sides now meet again with group positions at stake.
