Lebanon and Tajikistan are vying off in a crucial Group A match of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 on Monday (January 22) at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha.
The winner of the match may grab the second spot in the Group A points table with China and Qatar facing off at the same time in Al Rayyan. Qatar have already qualified for the knockout stages.
It's now between Tajikistan, Lebanon (1 point each) and China to decide the second and third spots in Group A with the second-spot holder automatically qualifying for the knockout stages while the third-place holder will wait till the end of the last group match if they finish in the top four places among the six third-place nations from all groups.
Tajikistan has proven they are capable of competing with the more seasoned teams in this region after just two games in their inaugural Asian Cup campaign. They have created their fair share of opportunities, but have yet to find the back of the net in their two encounters at this event, indicating that quality is still lacking.
Even though they are new to this tournament, they have recently experienced success in other Asian competitions, having won the most recent Merdeka Tournament and the King's Cup in 2022. That should instill confidence in Petar Segrt's team before this crucial game, where they will probably need three points to get through to the next round.
The Crowns have only lost once since 2021 when they have scored the first goal (5-1 against Uzbekistan in June 2023), and they have only won once in that same period of time when they have conceded the first goal (2-1 against Trinidad and Tobago in September 2022).
The Lebanese showed a lot more disciplined defensive effort on matchday two, but much like Tajikistan, they still need to improve in the attacking third. For the first time in their history at this event, Lebanon was able to keep the opponent off the scoresheet on Wednesday despite having lost three straight games in all competitions.
