Tchouameni Denies Nonsense Over Valverde Bust-Up
Aurelien Tchouameni dismisses claims of a serious fallout with Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde and states there is no personal issue between the pair. Tchouameni addresses reports of two training clashes, disciplinary action from Real Madrid, and speculation of a fight, while stressing both players remain united in chasing trophies and are now focused on the upcoming World Cup.
The France midfielder explains that Real Madrid handled the matter internally and that squad life continues as normal. Tchouameni underlines that he and Valverde share the same long-term targets at Real Madrid. Both want to compete for major titles again after a difficult domestic season that ended without trophies for the Spanish club.

Reports in early May state that Real Madrid disciplined both Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde after two incidents in training. The second confrontation reportedly left Valverde with a cut on the head that needed treatment. That injury ruled Valverde out of the Clasico at Camp Nou, where Real Madrid lost 2-0 to Barcelona in LaLiga.
Barcelona’s win in that Clasico secured a second straight LaLiga title under Hansi Flick. The defeat also confirmed that Real Madrid’s 2025-26 season finished without major silverware in any competition. It was then reported that both Tchouameni and Valverde received fines of 500,000, although the club did not provide public detail.
Tchouameni speaks for the first time about the incident during a press conference at France’s pre-World Cup training camp on Sunday. The midfielder says speculation intensified because of Real Madrid’s global profile and the constant attention around the club. Tchouameni argues that the picture painted in the media did not match what occurred during training.
"Obviously, things happened, you could see and hear it in the media. It was magnified because it came out in the media and when you play for Real Madrid that creates a great reaction," he told reporters. "A lot of nonsense was said in the press. I read that there was a fight and that I had punched him, which was not the case. I will not go into any more details."
Tchouameni stresses that Real Madrid knew exactly what happened between the players and handled it internally. "The most important thing is that the club was aware of what happened. There are many things that happen in the dressing room that do not appear in the press. Life goes on. Me and Fede have a common goal, to win titles with Real Madrid. There are no problems. And if I face him at the World Cup, I will want to win with the French team. On the personal side, there are no problems right now with Valverde."
Attention now shifts from Real Madrid to international duty, with Tchouameni preparing for the World Cup under France coach Didier Deschamps. France start their campaign on 16 June against Senegal in what will be Deschamps’ final tournament in charge. Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe captains Les Bleus at this World Cup and remains central to their hopes.
Mbappe’s record on the biggest stage is already outstanding. At the 2022 World Cup, Mbappe claimed the Golden Boot and finished with eight goals and two assists. That tally gave Mbappe the joint-highest number of goal contributions at the tournament, level with Lionel Messi. Mbappe also became only the second player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, after Geoff Hurst in 1966.
{TABLE_1}| Competition | Goals | Assists | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 World Cup | 8 | 2 | Golden Boot winner, hat-trick in final |
| Last two World Cups combined (2018 & 2022) | 12 | 2 | Most goal involvements across both tournaments |
Recent data shared by Opta highlights Mbappe’s influence across the last two World Cups. The statistics underline Mbappe’s status as a key attacking figure on the global stage, both for France and Real Madrid. The Opta post notes Mbappe leads all players for goal involvements at the two most recent tournaments.
Aurelien Tchouameni, Real Madrid, World Cup, Kylian Mbappe: leadership, dressing room and mindset
Tchouameni believes Mbappe’s role as captain can drive France to improve on their runners-up finish in Qatar. "Kylian is already a technical leader on the field, and off it as well," he said. "He talks a lot during games and in the dressing room. He has the capacity to reach everyone. He is our captain and he is the one who sets an example for us. He is someone who jokes a lot, both at club and in the French national team. He fulfils his role as captain very well."
The midfielder is also asked whether Real Madrid’s poor 2025-26 season influences preparations for the World Cup, either for Tchouameni or Mbappe. Tchouameni explains that club form and international football must be viewed separately when players join the national team environment for a major tournament.
"The World Cup is a little more special. As a club, we are always focused there, and the season did not go as we wanted. But every time we arrive with the national team, it doesn't matter what we do with our clubs because it's a new dynamic. You have to dissociate the two things."
Tchouameni therefore presents the training incidents with Valverde as a closed chapter at Real Madrid and stresses that relations inside the squad remain functional. Focus now lies on France’s World Cup campaign under Didier Deschamps, with Kylian Mbappe leading the group, while Tchouameni aims to translate club experience into a positive international impact.
