Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has dismissed Cristiano Ronaldo's recent remarks, continuing to ignore the criticism surrounding his leadership. Ronaldo, who recently surpassed 900 career goals during the international break, returned to Old Trafford in 2021 for a second spell at the club where he first gained fame.
During his one and a half seasons back at United, Ronaldo scored 27 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions. However, he fell out of favour under Ten Hag and subsequently joined Al Nassr in December 2022. In the 2021-22 season, Ronaldo led United in goal contributions in the Premier League with 21 (18 goals and three assists) and had an expected goals tally (xG) of 17.75, the highest in the squad.

Speaking on a podcast with former United teammate Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo criticised Ten Hag's pre-season comments about the club being far from winning the Premier League. When asked about these remarks, Ten Hag responded: "No, he said this if you read the article very well. He is entitled to his opinion. It's OK. He is far away in Saudi, far away from Manchester."
United entered the international break following consecutive Premier League defeats, including a 3-0 loss to arch-rivals Liverpool. This marks the second time under Ten Hag that United have lost two of their first three league games in a season (also in 2022-23). The last time they lost three of their first four was in 1986-87 when Ron Atkinson was replaced by Sir Alex Ferguson.
The upcoming match against Southampton at St. Mary's is crucial for Ten Hag's future at United. Despite being unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League away games against Southampton, this encounter feels pivotal for Ten Hag's tenure.
The two-week break since the Liverpool defeat has sparked widespread discussion about Ten Hag's future. However, he remains unfazed by external opinions. "It doesn't impact me," Ten Hag stated. "I know where we are in the process and what we have to do and where we are going."
"I have said before we are still in a transition period," he added. "We have to integrate many young players into the team and still deal with injuries while bringing players back into form." He emphasised that despite these challenges, winning every game remains essential: "No excuses; we have to win every game."
The Dutchman reiterated that both he and his team understand this necessity: "I know that. The team knows that. It doesn't matter who is available."
As Manchester United prepare for their next challenge, all eyes will be on how Ten Hag navigates this critical period amidst ongoing scrutiny.
