Erik ten Hag has cautioned Manchester United players that their spots in the matchday squad are not guaranteed. The club has already signed Joshua Zirkzee, Lenny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui this transfer window. Reports suggest more signings could be on the horizon.
Jadon Sancho missed United's 1-0 win over Fulham due to an ear infection. The 24-year-old returned from a successful loan at Borussia Dortmund, where he created 25 chances, scored two goals, and registered two assists in the Bundesliga. Despite his performance, Ten Hag hinted that even high-profile players like Sancho might find themselves on the sidelines this season.

Ten Hag emphasised the importance of having a deep squad with double positioning. "We will see [if Sancho is involved against Brighton]," Ten Hag said. "We have a squad, and I hope we will have a squad with double positioning. You need them all throughout the season because it is survival of the fittest."
The manager stressed that player attitude is crucial. "We have to manage it; the attitude of the players is very important," he added. "Sometimes they will be disappointed they are not in the starting XI, but they have to deal with it; you win as a squad."
Manchester United will face Brighton in their first away match of the Premier League season on Saturday. The team aims to build on their opening-day victory and continue their positive start to the campaign.
United are also reportedly close to securing Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte to strengthen their midfield options. While Ten Hag did not confirm this move, he expressed satisfaction with the club's current transfer activities.
"They're showing we're going in the right direction," Ten Hag stated regarding United's transfer business. "We know as a club we have to catch up, but it shows our ambition, the way we want to go."
The manager praised the quality of new signings: "We have done good business, very good players, quality players who will contribute to our squad and the quality of our squad."
The Red Devils' focus remains on maintaining high motivation levels among all players until next May when prizes are decided. Ten Hag reiterated that team success is paramount over individual achievements.
The team's strategy involves utilising every player effectively throughout the season. This approach ensures readiness for any challenges ahead while keeping everyone motivated and focused on collective goals.
