Reminder: Saudi Arabia vs Oman Live later tonight. 8:30 PM Local Time
The Group F action commence on Tuesday (January 16) with reigning ASEAN champions Thailand taking on Kyrgyzstan in their opening match of the tournament at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium in Doha.
A positive result is crucial for both the nations in the tournament as they are lowest ranked sides in Group F behind the two favourites for direct qualifcation in Saudi Arabia and Oman, who face off right after this game in Al Rayyan.
Thailand eventually qualified for this competition again after defeating the Maldives 3-0 in their first Asian Cup qualification match in the third round. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan finished their third-round group undefeated.
The War Elephants' 2019 Asian Cup campaign was a huge success as they reached the knockout stages for the first time since 1972. They went on to win back-to-back titles from the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) since then and now that they are in second place in 2026 World Cup Qualifiers after two games, they can move on to the third round.
Despite a few of those victories, the Thailand FA chose to take a different approach and fired popular coach Alexandre Polking in favor of Masatada Ishii. The Japanese coach's debut as a manager went about as terribly as he could have anticipated, as the War Elephants collapsed in the second half, giving up five goals in the last forty-five minutes and losing 5-0.
In their last five games in all competitions before AFC Asian Cup, Thailand has given up 17 goals; however, 13 of those goals came in only two games, one of which was an 8-0 loss to Georgia. Despite defeating Kyrgyzstan 3-1 in their lone friendly match in June 2001, they have never won their initial group match in this competition.
Kyrgyzstan, on the other hand, created a strong first impression at the 2019 Asian Cup, making it into the last 16 in their maiden appearance after beating the Philippines 3-1. The White Falcons were a formidable team even though they had lost four of their five games in the tournament four years prior.
They had lost their opening game 2-1 against China, but they had also narrowly lost a thrilling round of 16 match 3-2 in extra time to the United Arab Emirates. Stefan Tarkovic, who took over in April 2023, will have to attempt to emulate the achievements of his predecessor, Aleksandr Krestinin.
