Fluminense's captain, Thiago Silva, played through injury to guide his team to a notable victory in the Club World Cup. They defeated Inter 2-0 in the last 16, despite Inter being favourites. The Opta supercomputer had given Inter an 84.4% chance of advancing, while Fluminense had only a 15.6% chance. Yet, the Brazilian side triumphed in the intense heat at Bank of America Stadium.
Inter struggled to find their rhythm after half-time, and Fluminense sealed their win with a late goal by Hercules. He scored from the edge of the box into the bottom-right corner during stoppage time. Earlier, German Cano had headed Jhon Arias' deflected cross past Yann Sommer to give Fluminense an early lead.

Despite having less possession than Inter (32% compared to 68%), Fluminense matched them with four shots on target and two big chances. They also had a slightly higher expected goals tally (1.15 xG to 1.13). This tactical efficiency helped them secure their place in the quarter-finals.
The Brazilian club has now kept five clean sheets in their last six matches, including against Borussia Dortmund and Mamelodi Sundowns. They are the second Brazilian team to reach this stage after Palmeiras defeated Botafogo in their round-of-16 match.
Thiago Silva, who previously played for AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, was instrumental in defence. He made eight clearances, matching Ignacio for the most on the pitch. Only Facundo Bernal and Ignacio surpassed his two interceptions.
"I am very proud of my team-mates," Silva told DAZN. "It is so hard to play against Inter; they played the Champions League final only a month ago." Despite a recent hamstring issue, Silva praised his medical team for helping him play.
Cristian Chivu, Inter's new coach, expressed disappointment after the match: "We tried until the end... but it wasn't our day." He noted that Fluminense's organised defence made it difficult for Inter to find solutions despite changes in formation and increased crosses in the second half.
Brazilian clubs have shown strong performances against European teams at this tournament, winning three out of five matches so far. Fluminense will now face either Manchester City or Al-Hilal for a spot in the semi-finals.
