'This Is the Step I Was Looking For': Martin Zubimendi on Leaving Real Sociedad for Arsenal

By MyKhel Staff

Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a big-money move worth £51 million.

The 26-year-old midfielder brings an end to a 15-year spell at his boyhood club to make the leap to the Premier League, signing a five-year contract with the Gunners. His arrival marks Arsenal's second major signing of the summer, following the acquisition of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on JioHotstar, Zubimendi reflected on what the move means for him both personally and professionally.

"It is a very important moment in my career; the step I was looking for and wanted to take. It is true that I spent 15 years at my previous club, and obviously this is a drastic change, but I am really looking forward to it," Zubimendi said.

Zubimendi was quick to praise the scale of Arsenal and the welcome he received upon his arrival. "As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are," he noted. "Andrea [Berta] and Mikel [Arteta] took excellent care of me, leaving me with no doubts whatsoever."

Having grown up in San Sebastián, Zubimendi shares common roots with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, something he acknowledges with a smile.

"We come from the same city and played for the same teams. At least we will have something to talk about off the pitch. So, I am happy about that - but I do not think it is a big deal."

When asked what he brings to the pitch, Zubimendi offered a modest self-assessment. "I do not really like talking about myself. I would say I am a pretty versatile midfielder, who can play on my own or alongside others. I am hard-working and bring balance to the team. You will see for yourselves."

Zubimendi's signing is seen as a crucial addition for Arsenal, with the departures of senior midfielders like Thomas Partey and Jorginho. Known for his tactical awareness and calm under pressure, Zubimendi has earned a reputation as one of Europe's premier holding midfielders.

He arrives fresh from a successful season with Real Sociedad, helping them lift the Copa del Rey and finish in Champions League spots, while also being part of Spain's victorious Euro 2024 squad. Arsenal and Arteta will now hope Zubimendi proves the missing piece in their quest for domestic and European glory this season.
