Tottenham Sacks Thomas Frank As Poor Form Drags Spurs Into Relegation Battle

Tottenham have dismissed Thomas Frank after a 2-1 home loss to Newcastle United, ending a tenure of just under eight months. Spurs sit 16th in the Premier League, five points clear of the relegation places. The club now face leaders Arsenal next in a high-pressure north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 22 February.

The defeat to Newcastle extended Tottenham’s winless league sequence to eight matches, with four draws and four losses. It is Spurs’ longest Premier League run without victory since the nine-game spell between May and October 2008 under Juande Ramos. Pressure around the Men’s Head Coach position increased sharply during this recent slide.

Spurs confirmed the dismissal on Wednesday in a detailed statement, setting out the Board’s reasoning. "The Club has taken the decision to make a change in the Men's Head Coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today, Spurs said in a statement on Wednesday. Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we have been determined to give him the time and support needed to build for the future together. However, results and performances have led the Board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary."

The club also praised Thomas Frank’s conduct during the short spell in charge. "Throughout his time at the Club, Thomas has conducted himself with unwavering commitment, giving everything in his efforts to move the Club forward. We would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success in the future." The formal announcement underlined appreciation despite the poor league results.

Thomas Frank arrived from Brentford in June 2025, replacing Ange Postecoglou after a strong previous spell. Frank signed a contract running until 2028, signalling a long-term plan. However, Tottenham’s league form declined instead of improving. After the Newcastle defeat, Frank insisted that Frank was "1,000%" sure of remaining in charge, but the Board acted the following day.

Domestic league numbers played a major part in Tottenham’s call on Thomas Frank. Frank collected 29 points from 26 Premier League matches, averaging 1.12 points per game. That is the lowest rate for any Spurs manager who has overseen at least five league fixtures in the competition’s history for the club.

While the Premier League campaign faltered, Tottenham enjoyed stronger results in the Champions League under Thomas Frank. Spurs reached the top eight in the new league phase and secured automatic progression to the last 16. They won five of eight matches in Europe, suggesting a contrast between continental and domestic performances during this period.

Tottenham’s Board also judged the season against exits in both domestic cup competitions under Thomas Frank. Spurs went out of the cups while also sliding down the Premier League table. Frank’s task was complicated by a lengthy injury list that hit key areas of the Tottenham squad. Lucas Bergvall, Ben Davies, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison are all currently unavailable. Spurs must also manage without suspended captain Cristian Romero for three Premier League fixtures, starting with Arsenal’s visit on 22 February.

Despite the dismissal, Tottenham still have Champions League knockout ties ahead and a Premier League battle to manage. The club move forward from Thomas Frank’s departure with European progress secured but domestic concerns growing. Upcoming results, especially against Arsenal and during Romero’s suspension, will shape the rest of Spurs’ season.
