Thomas Tuchel Appointed As New England Manager To Lead Team Forward

The Football Association has confirmed Thomas Tuchel as the new England manager. He succeeds Gareth Southgate and aims to guide the team towards international success.

Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new manager of the England national football team, as announced by the Football Association. Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich at the end of last season, becomes the 16th permanent manager for England. He is also the first non-English manager since Fabio Capello in 2012 and only the third overall, following Capello and Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Lee Carsley had been serving as interim manager after Gareth Southgate resigned following a 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Carsley managed to win three out of four matches during his tenure. He will continue to lead England for their final two Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland in November. Tuchel will officially take over on January 1, with Anthony Barry as his assistant.

Tuchel Takes Charge as England Manager

Tuchel has a strong managerial record, having overseen 578 club matches with 331 wins, 114 draws, and 133 losses. This gives him a win percentage of 57.3%. His career highlights include replacing Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund and leading Paris Saint-Germain to two Ligue 1 titles between 2018 and 2020. During his time at PSG, he achieved a win ratio of 74.8% across all competitions.

His tenure at Chelsea was marked by success when he guided them to Champions League victory in 2021. Tuchel became the first coach to reach consecutive European finals with two different clubs after leading PSG to their first Champions League final the previous year. At Chelsea, he won 60 out of his 100 matches, achieving a win percentage of 60%, which ranks fourth among Chelsea managers who have overseen at least 100 games.

Tuchel's next challenge is significant as he aims to end England's long wait for an international trophy since their World Cup victory in 1966. The task is made more challenging by following Southgate's successful tenure. Southgate led England to two finals and achieved more major tournament wins than any other England manager.

Southgate's record includes winning 61 out of his 102 matches with England, making him one of only three managers to reach over a hundred games in charge. Only Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey have more wins than Southgate's tally of victories.

In his statement through the Football Association, Tuchel expressed pride in leading England: "I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team." He acknowledged his personal connection to English football and expressed excitement about working with talented players alongside Anthony Barry.

The German coach thanked the FA for their trust and looked forward to starting this new journey with England's national team. His appointment brings hope for future success on the international stage.
