Tino Livramento Injury Update: Newcastle Full Back Ruled Out Of FIFA World Cup - Here’s why

England’s World Cup preparations have taken an early hit after Tino Livramento was ruled out with a calf injury, forcing Thomas Tuchel into a late defensive change before the Group-stage opener against Croatia.

The Newcastle United full-back suffered the injury during training on Sunday. Further checks and a scan on Monday confirmed he would not be able to play any part in the tournament. The English Football Association said the medical assessment “unfortunately confirmed he could play no further part in England’s tournament”.

Who Will Replace Tino Livramento In The Squad?

Tuchel has moved quickly to bring in Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah as Livramento’s replacement. The 26-year-old is expected to join England at their training base in Kansas City before travelling with the squad for their opening fixture in Dallas.

The change comes within the permitted window for injury-related replacements. Tournament rules allow teams to replace an injured player up to 24 hours before their first match, giving England enough time to register Chalobah before facing Croatia on Wednesday.

Livramento’s absence is a blow because of the flexibility he offered across the back line. He can operate at both right-back and left-back, making him a valuable squad option during a tournament where fixture congestion and tactical changes can quickly test depth.

He was also viewed as an important understudy to Reece James on the right side of defence. With England entering the tournament under a new coaching set-up, losing a player capable of covering multiple roles reduces Tuchel’s options before a ball has been kicked.

Chalobah And England's Changing Tactics

Chalobah has mainly played as a centre-back for Chelsea in recent seasons, but he also has experience at right-back. That versatility appears to have made him the most suitable late call-up as Tuchel looks to protect England’s defensive balance.

His inclusion gives England another player comfortable in a back four or as part of a more flexible defensive shape. That could matter against Croatia, a side traditionally strong in midfield and capable of forcing opponents into long spells without possession.

The timing is far from ideal for England. Final training sessions before a major tournament opener are usually used to sharpen combinations, not adjust the squad. Chalobah will have limited time to settle into Tuchel’s plans, though his familiarity with several Premier League teammates should help.

For Livramento, the injury ends what would have been a significant opportunity on the international stage. For England, the focus now shifts to ensuring the disruption does not affect their start in Dallas, where Croatia will provide an immediate test of their defensive organisation.
