Togo football team attacked, 1 dead, 9 wounded

Luanda Jan 9: Togo national football team on its to aprticipate in top African tournament in Angola was attacked by the gunmen on Friday night, Jan 8 in which the driver was killed and none others were wounded.

Togo team official said that team under heavy firing for several minutes shortly after their bus entered Angolan enclave of Cabinda.

The separatist group the Front for the Liberation of Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC) has claimed responsibility for the attack

Badly shaken by the attack, Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor said that the team may withdraw from the African Nations Cup.

"As the captain of my national team I can say that if the security is not sure then perhaps we will be leaving tomorrow Saturday,", Adebayor said.

However, organizer, Confederation of African Football (CAF) said that the tournament will take place as planned.

"Our first priority is the safety of the players but the tournament will go ahead," CAF spokesman Suleimanu Habubu said in Luanda.

CAF senior offcials will reportedly fly down to Angola on Saturday, Jan 9.

Meanwhile the Anglolan minister, Antonio Bento Bembe has called the attack an act of terrorism, adding that the government that would ensure that tournament wich is scheduled to take place from Jan 10-31 runs smoothly.

The attack took place just five month before South Africa is gearing up to host the World Cup Football 2010.
