Top three performers from Champions League fixtures on opening day

New Delhi, Sep 13: Much awaited Champions League returned on Tuesday night (September 13) and many top teams were at the fight to show their worth on the global stage.

Last night's fixture included top teams from all the top five European leagues and teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint German etc. All the teams fought with their opponents in their respective groups.

There were not many upsets last nights as all the top teams marked their win comprehensively. Only Benfica lost at home against CSKA Moscow and Atletico drew at Roma away.

However, apart from that, all the other notable teams mark their opening match with goal fest and here is the list of top three players who impressed mostly last night.

1. Lionel Messi vs Juventus:

Barcelona registered their first win of Champions league with a 3-0 win over Juventus and who else other than Messi, who took some revenge for last season's Champions League elimination at the hands of the Italian giants.

The little Argentine scored twice and set up his side's second for Ivan Rakitic as Ernesto Valverde's men snapped up first three points of the tournament. Messi was deployed in the number 10 role in the team and he made no mistake in guiding his team.

The first goal came on the stroke of half-time and playing with a one-two with Suarez and Dembele, the Barcelona top scorer hurriedly put a shot towards the goal at the edge of the box but Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon could only watch it go past the net.

He scored his second with another stunning effort, skipping past two defenders from the right to send Buffon the wrong way to score the goal. Messi, earlier, had the record of not scoring against Buffon in UCL, however, it seems he compensated all the debts in one single match.

2. Marouane Fellaini vs Basel:

The Belgian was on the bench at the start of the game, however, a hamstring injury to Pogba in the first half made Mourinho calling him on the pitch for the remainder of the match and by every means the midfielder repaid the manager's faith by putting a magnificent display on the pitch to guide his team a 3-0 win against Swiss giant FC Basel.

Fellaini headed the hosts into a deserved lead during a first half cross from right back Ashley Young and later in the game made a further assist from the right flank to Rashford who registered his debut goal of Champions league.

Fellaini was all over in the pitch through out the match, broke numerous of counter attacks of the visiting team and made a couple of key passes to achieve the Man of the match award later.

3. Neymar vs Celtic:

The world's highest paid player did not disappoint his fans as he marked his return in the Champions league with PSG with a goal and assist against Celtic as the French side routed the Scotish champions in their heaviest ever home European defeat.

The former Barcelona player broke the deadlock in the first half with a quick through ball from midfielder Rabiot as the Brazilian star opened the scoring in the 19th minute. He later made an assist to another new signing, 18-year-old French sensation Kylian Mbappe who added a second in the 34th minute.

Apart from these three players like Lewandoski, Romelu Lukaku, Michy Batshuayi and Edison Cavani also found the scoring boot in the primary fixtures and it will be interesting to see who will be star players in today's second batch of group stages matches of this week's UCL.
