Tottenham Takes Narrow 1-0 Lead Against Liverpool In EFL Cup Semi-Final First Leg

Lucas Bergvall scored late to secure a 1-0 victory for Tottenham over Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg. The match featured VAR drama and a serious injury to Rodrigo Bentancur.

Lucas Bergvall emerged as the hero for Tottenham, securing a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final. His decisive goal came just four minutes before the final whistle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This narrow victory gives Spurs a slight edge ahead of their return match at Anfield on February 6.

Earlier in the match, Dominic Solanke's goal was disallowed after a VAR review determined he was offside. He had initially scored from Pedro Porro's pass, but it was ruled out ten minutes before Bergvall's winner. Tottenham started aggressively, with Alisson saving Radu Dragusin's attempt from Son Heung-min's cross early on.

Tottenham Edges Liverpool in EFL Cup Match

Rodrigo Bentancur caused concern when he left the field on a stretcher after collapsing unchallenged within six minutes of play. The game paused for medical attention, and later updates confirmed Bentancur was conscious and headed to the hospital for further checks. Meanwhile, Pedro Porro missed an opportunity to score when Virgil van Dijk blocked his shot on an open goal.

Substitute Darwin Nunez failed to convert a one-on-one chance against debutant Antonin Kinsky from a tight angle. Trent Alexander-Arnold also saw his powerful shot cleared off the line by Dragusin. Liverpool's frustration grew when they called for Bergvall's dismissal following a late tackle on Kostas Tsimikas, but no second yellow card was issued.

Bergvall made history by becoming Tottenham's youngest scorer in the EFL Cup since Gareth Bale in 2007. At 18 years and 341 days old, his goal not only secured victory but also etched his name into Spurs' records. His strike came from Solanke’s cutback pass, finding the bottom-right corner and sealing the win.

Liverpool remains optimistic about reaching consecutive finals for the first time since their streak between 1981 and 1984. Despite this setback, they have advanced from seven of their last nine EFL Cup semi-finals. However, this defeat marks only their second loss in their last 20 games in this competition.

As Tottenham prepares for their trip to Anfield next month, they hold a slim advantage over Liverpool. The upcoming match promises to be intense as both teams aim to secure their place in the final.
