Tottenham Relegation Battle: De Zerbi Praises Tottenham's Character And Spirit

Tottenham dropped two vital points in the Premier League relegation fight after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser to Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Roberto De Zerbi’s side led twice but the match ended 2-2, leaving Spurs inside the bottom three with only five fixtures left to secure survival.

The late goal from Georginio Rutter denied Tottenham a win that would have taken the club out of the relegation zone. If Nottingham Forest and West Ham win their matches on Sunday and Monday, Spurs could slip four points from safety, deepening pressure on De Zerbi and the squad.

Tottenham relegation battle: De Zerbi

Despite the setback, De Zerbi insisted the display gave encouragement for the run-in and praised the performance. The head coach accepted the psychological strain on the squad but argued their effort showed progress. De Zerbi underlined that every remaining game now carries major weight as Tottenham chase the points needed to stay in the Premier League.

De Zerbi did not hide frustration at seeing another lead disappear, yet stressed the group must not dwell on the result. A trip to Wolves next weekend is already in focus, with the Italian demanding the same intensity and structure shown against Brighton, but with greater defensive control in the final minutes.

"I am sorry for the result, for the players, because they are suffering too much," he said."Today, we deserved to win the game. I am positive, I am proud of my players. They played a fantastic game with character and spirit. We have to be stronger than this result, we have to move on and prepare for the next game and try to win the game at Wolves [next weekend]. Today, I saw signs, I saw blood, character, qualities, organisation with and without the balleverythingto reach our target."

Pedro Porro put Tottenham ahead in the first half, rewarding aggressive pressing and energetic work without the ball. Brighton responded, but Spurs again moved in front after the break. However, the hosts failed to close the game out, and Rutter’s stoppage-time strike ensured De Zerbi’s former club left north London with a point.

De Zerbi acknowledged that conceding so late felt particularly painful given the overall display. Tottenham had controlled long periods of the match, especially before half-time, and repeatedly forced Brighton back. Yet the single lapse in added time proved decisive, leaving Spurs with only one point instead of three.

Tottenham mentality, fans and De Zerbi message

The Spurs head coach stressed that mindset will decide whether the club avoids relegation. De Zerbi urged the squad to follow guidance closely and block out negative thoughts, highlighting that confidence and focus are as important as tactics during this tense period near the bottom of the table.

"I said [after the game] to be strong, to follow me again and again because I want to help them," he added."They can change the mentality because that is the most important part. Now, it's too easy to think negatively, but we have to be focused on this performance and work to find the condition to win again. I am positive because I know my players, I know their qualities. I know them as people and I believe in them. I know we are fighting to stay in the Premier League. A very difficult moment. But we are lucky, every one of us, to work in this club with these fans because it was an incredible atmosphere today. You would think we are fighting for the Champions League, not relegation. Until the end, we will fight in every game and give our best. If we are able to give our best, it's not finished yet. We have to improve a lot of things. The crucial part is to keep this mentality and I told the players to come on Monday afternoon with the same behaviour they showed today. I don't want to work with sad people, with negative people. They have to believe in me. If I am here, it's because I am positive about staying in the Premier League."

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro on performance and outlook

Porro, who scored the opener, backed De Zerbi’s stance on staying upbeat after the draw. The defender highlighted Tottenham’s strong pressing and structure in the first half and argued that dwelling on disappointment would damage preparation for the final five games of the Premier League campaign.

"I think after the game, we don't have time for disappointment," the defender said."For me and my team-mates, the best thing is to keep pushing, keep going. I think the team today was very good. I think the first half was very good for us. The team pressed very well. I think the most important thing now is staying positive."

The draw leaves Tottenham’s position delicate, but De Zerbi and the players insist belief remains high. With Wolves up next and the crowd firmly behind the team, Spurs aim to carry the same intensity, sharpen late-game focus and turn competitive performances into the wins needed to protect Premier League status.
