Tottenham Defeat At Atletico Madrid Described As Doomsday Scenario By Van De Ven

Tottenham Hotspur's 5-2 loss to Atletico Madrid in Madrid has left the club on the brink of a Champions League exit. Micky van de Ven called the match a doomsday scenario as Spurs endure a difficult spell, including a six-match winless run and a looming relegation fight in the Premier League.

Tottenham are facing a crisis after a heavy 5-2 loss to Atletico Madrid left the club close to a Champions League last-16 exit and still stuck in a Premier League relegation battle, with Micky van de Ven describing the situation as a "doomsday scenario" following another damaging night in Spain.

The defeat at the Metropolitano means Tottenham have now suffered six straight losses in all competitions for the first time in their history, while Igor Tudor’s side sit only one point above the relegation places in the English top-flight ahead of a difficult trip to Liverpool at Anfield.

Tottenham defeat called doomsday

The collapse against Atletico came at the worst possible moment for Tottenham, who are already under pressure domestically and must now attempt a near-impossible turnaround in the second leg after conceding five away goals, a result that deepens concern over form, confidence and defensive stability within Tudor’s struggling squad.

Atletico raced into a 4-0 advantage inside just 22 minutes, the second-fastest time a side has led by at least four goals in a Champions League match, with only Real Madrid’s 20-minute surge against Dinamo Zagreb in November 2011 producing a quicker four-goal cushion in the competition’s history.

Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, selected ahead of Guglielmo Vicario, endured a nightmare opening spell with two costly mistakes that forced Tudor to replace Kinsky after only 17 minutes, while Van de Ven’s slip allowed Antoine Griezmann to score Atletico’s second as the LaLiga club punished almost every error during that frantic early period.

Van de Ven, who has been central to Tottenham’s defence this season, accepted responsibility for the incident that helped Griezmann through on goal but also pointed out that several teammates struggled to stay on their feet on the Metropolitano surface as Atletico maintained relentless pressure and took control before some Spurs players could settle.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport after the match, Van de Ven did not hide frustration, saying: "Terrible. I'll be completely honest with you, it's actually a doomsday scenario, everything that could go wrong in the first 20 minutes went wrong." The defender’s assessment captured the mood around Tottenham after another heavy setback in Europe.

Tottenham Champions League defeat followed by suspension and growing frustration

Van de Ven described several incidents during the opening quarter of the match as almost unavoidable, explaining that multiple players lost footing, yet stressed that the pitch could not be a serious excuse, repeating that view while reflecting on a spell in which Tottenham conceded repeatedly and saw the tie slip away before half-time.

The defender added that standard dressing-room phrases did not fit the current situation, saying Tottenham are taking "blow after blow" and highlighting how difficult it feels to stay positive when results keep worsening, with the squad under scrutiny and confidence fragile heading into a vital domestic fixture at Anfield.

Van de Ven also noted that a suspension will rule the Dutch defender out against Liverpool after a red card in the recent match with Crystal Palace, and there was further controversy when Van de Ven avoided dismissal versus Atletico despite a poor challenge on David Hancko that could have resulted in another sending-off.

The latest setback in Madrid, combined with a historic losing streak and rising relegation fears, leaves Tottenham needing a major response in both the Champions League and Premier League, while Van de Ven’s suspension and the defensive issues exposed by Atletico underline the scale of the task facing Tudor and the squad in the coming weeks.
