Ange Postecoglou Asserts Tottenham Should Have Won Against Newcastle United

Ange Postecoglou believes Tottenham Hotspur deserved to win against Newcastle United. Despite losing 2-1, he highlighted missed chances and injuries impacting the match.

Ange Postecoglou expressed his belief that Tottenham Hotspur should have emerged victorious against Newcastle United. Despite taking an early lead through Dominic Solanke, Spurs fell 2-1 at home. Anthony Gordon equalised swiftly, and Alexander Isak scored the decisive goal before halftime. Postecoglou felt that if circumstances had been fair, Tottenham would have secured the win.

Postecoglou shared his thoughts with BBC Sport, stating, "On the balance of play, any balance you want with all things being equal, we would have won." He praised his players' efforts and was proud of their performance despite the result. The manager reiterated that an even playing field would have led to a different outcome.

Postecoglou: Tottenham Deserved Victory Over Newcastle

Tottenham's frustration was evident when Newcastle's equaliser was confirmed after a lengthy VAR check for a potential handball by Joelinton. The Brazilian's arm was deemed to be in a natural position, allowing the goal to stand. This decision added to Spurs' sense of injustice during the match.

Spurs faced significant challenges during the game, including injuries that left them without a recognised centre-back after Radu Dragusin's halftime exit. The team's average age was notably young at 23 years and 336 days, marking their youngest Premier League starting XI since March 2015.

The match statistics showed Tottenham had 13 shots compared to Newcastle's 14, with both sides managing four shots on target. However, Spurs' expected goals (xG) were slightly lower at 0.84 compared to Newcastle's 1.08. Despite these figures, Postecoglou believed his team deserved more from the game.

Impressive Performances Amidst Adversity

Brennan Johnson hit the post in the second half, while substitutes James Maddison and Solanke also came close to scoring for Tottenham. Brandon Austin made his first Premier League start and impressed Postecoglou with his performance under pressure.

Reflecting on his players' efforts, Postecoglou stated, "Really good... The moments we are going through are putting big tasks on players, and they're rising to the occasion." He emphasised that their performance merited a better result.

Despite their recent struggles at home, where they have not won in six league games since October 2008, Postecoglou remains optimistic about his team's potential when conditions are fairer. His focus is on building resilience and improving performances as they navigate these challenging times.
