Ange Postecoglou expressed optimism despite Tottenham's loss to Manchester City, highlighting their second-half performance as a foundation for future improvement. Erling Haaland's early goal secured City's victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs struggled initially but showed resilience after the break, with Wilson Odobert, Son Heung-min, and Pape Sarr missing key chances to equalise.
Tottenham's expected goals (xG) statistics revealed a stark contrast between halves. They trailed 1.91 to 0.06 in the first half but turned the tables in the second, leading 1.1 to 0.18 and restricting City to just one shot on target after halftime. This marked only the fourth instance under Postecoglou where Spurs lost without scoring at home, with three of those defeats against City.

Despite remaining in the lower half of the Premier League table after their 14th defeat this season, Postecoglou found positives in their play. "In the first half we had to hang in there," he told BBC Sport's Match of the Day. "We created a couple chances but were wasteful with the ball." He emphasised their dominance in all areas during the second half but lamented missed opportunities.
Postecoglou noted that Tottenham typically finishes games strongly but acknowledged issues with ball retention in the first half. "We turned the ball over too many times," he said, adding that such errors allowed City to establish rhythm. He believed cleaner entries into the final third could have yielded more chances.
Following a 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday, Postecoglou made tactical changes by benching Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min initially. However, he did not attribute these changes to their defeat, noting that Spurs appeared revitalised when both players entered as part of a quadruple substitution in the 66th minute.
"It's disappointing to lose again," Postecoglou admitted, yet he saw glimpses of Tottenham's identity returning. "We played aggressive football and took it to a very good opponent," he remarked. The substitutions seemed to strengthen Spurs towards the game's conclusion.
Postecoglou remains hopeful about building consistency from their second-half display against City. "If we can begin to get consistent with that level of performance," he stated, "then we will be able to push on." Tottenham faces AZ next in eight days for their Europa League last-16 tie's first leg.
