Tottenham Hotspur: From Celebrating a Draw to Celebrating a Defeat - The Fragile Foundation of a 'Small' Club

Tottenham Hotspur ended their own hopes of Champions League football after their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Tuesday. But a section of their fans are elated, as by losing, they have potentially jeopardized the chances for Arsenal, their local rivals.

After a decent first-half performance, Spurs conceded two goals in the second half, as Erling Haaland scored both of them to secure Man City's victory.

Tottenham

It was Tottenham's biggest chance to give themselves a chance in the UCL next season, but they squandered it. But what was the atmosphere in the stadium? The usual Tottenham Hotspur Stadium buzzes in these kinds of clashes, but the atmosphere was sombre, as if the fans were reluctant to voice their support for their own team.

Even their manager Ange Postecoglou admitted that the atmosphere was 'not usual' and his team had to deal with that. Tottenham's UCL hopes were hinging on the outcome, but it was Arsenal, who were monitoring the match closely, because of their own fate was hinging on the match.

The entire Red half of North London was cheering for their bitter rivals and was expecting a helping hand from them, but it never came. Rather than, what unfolded at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was beyond expectation.

A Spurs Poznan

As soon as Erling Haaland's goal went in, a section of Tottenham supporters started celebrating. Those fans were elated and even started doing the 'Poznan' celebration, which is very popular among Manchester City supporters.

They were jumping for joy, with their face full of happiness while their own team just conceded a goal. All because of what? Because that would have denied Arsenal. All of Spurs' superfans, self-proclaimed biggest fans were united in joy at their team's defeat. Here is another example-

A former Tottenham player, named Jamie O'Hara, who calls himself a Tottenham fan, went delirious after Manchester City scored their goal. MyKhel can understand the streets of North London had Spurs fans singing Manchester City songs and all were united to accept the team's defeat to deny Arsenal.

A Fragile Foundation

A mentality which is beyond belief got exposed in front of the world, and Tottenham fans were happy to live with that. Their own armour was getting ravaged but they were living the alternate reality of thwarting Arsenal from winning the Premier League. And the biggest shame for Spurs is that their own manager accepted a 'Fragile Foundation' at the club.

"I think the last 48 hours have revealed that the foundations are really fragile. The last 48 hours have revealed a fair bit to me," Tottenham's own coach Ange Postecoglou said to the media after the Manchester City defeat.

"Outside, Inside - everywhere. It's been an interesting exercise," Postecoglou added when asked about where the foundation suffered fragility.

From Celebrating a Draw to Celebrating a Defeat

Tottenham Hotspur celebrated a draw in the 2003-04 season, when Arsenal won the league at White Hart Lane. Thierry Henry, Patric Vieira and the Invincibles won the famous Golden Trophy at Tottenham, but even in that game, they were celebrating after a draw.

But this time, the Spurs fanatics are celebrating a defeat. In this period of two decades, the biggest achievement for Spurs has been winning the League Cup in 2007-08, that's all if we count trophies. The defeat against Man City was their fifth league defeat in six matches, but they are happy to live with that.

A constricted brain leads to a doomed future. And the way the Spurs fans celebrated their defeat, they are not far from that. If one's own downfall leading to someone else getting denied from something good pleases one, that's an alarming parasite. In Spurs case, it is likely their never-ending cycle of mediocrity.

Arsenal will be gutted. Mikel Arteta's men have had an outstanding season and if they are denied by winning the league by this margin, it will be disappointing. But one thing is for sure, the Gunners will be back in business come next season. Those Red and White gladiators will restart the process and rise again. What do you think will happen to Tottenham? A DVD maybe on how they denied Arsenal by losing to Manchester City.
