Tottenhams Toby Alderweireld declared fit by Belgium as tension between player and club continues

London, March 21: Contract rebel Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has been declared fit by Belgium boss Roberto Martinez after the player joined the national camp to play a friendly against Saudi Arabia.

The Spurs centre-half suffered an injury in November and came back from the injury in January however till now has not played for Spurs since the FA Cup match at Rochdale a month ago.

The centre-back has been at loggerheads with the club over a new deal for some time now and now it is assumed that this is the very reason Pochettino is not opting for the player.

Alderweireld has been one of the pillars of Tottenham defence since his move to London in 2015. He was believed to be fully fit in late January, however, Pochettino opted to leave him out of crucial matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus last month.

Alternatively, some of the reports also stated a different point of view where it was reported that injury issues had been the main reasons behind his exclusion.

However, Belgium coach Roberto Martinez now has dismissed all such gossips and has stated that the 29-year-old is fully fit and is ready to play again.

Martinez said: "Toby Alderweireld is completely fit after a difficult rehabilitation."

Alderweireld who is currently on a €100,000-a-week cap at the club reportedly has demanded something in the region of €180,000 a week, however, Spurs are not willing to go over the €120,000/week.

And with the situation, such complicated, many reports have suggested that Spurs have now formally backed off from contract negotiations with Alderweireld amidst his demands for a top-level wage.

The former Sotton defender still has one year left in his contract however Spurs can trigger an option to extend the contract until 2020 but that would activate a buyout clause allowing him to leave for as little as £25m.

The Spurs board reportedly do not want to lose the player on a such a cheap deal and thus to encash on him furthermore the club has already reportedly transfer listed the player and will consider selling him in the summer for £50m.

According to some reports, Premier League sides like Manchester United, Chelsea have already shown interest in the player, however, there is reportedly also interest from overseas clubs like PSG and Barcelona.
