Tottenham Relegation Escape On Final Day: Victory Over Everton Keeps Survival Hopes Alive

Tottenham stayed in the Premier League on the final day, yet Micky van de Ven described the situation as humiliating, with relegation still a threat. Joao Palhinha’s first-half strike earned a 1-0 win over Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, enough to keep Spurs safe and extend Everton’s pressure despite strong spells from the visitors.

West Ham’s 3-0 victory over Leeds United meant survival would have been secured if Tottenham had lost, but that scenario never arrived. Instead, the Hammers will drop into the Championship in 2026-27 alongside Burnley and Wolves, while Spurs remain in the top flight after another tense finish to a difficult campaign.

Tottenham survive relegation scare with Everton win

Sunday’s success was Tottenham’s first Premier League home win since December, when Brentford were beaten 2-0, and only their third home league victory all season. That total matches Hull City’s record from 2008-09 for the fewest home wins by a club that avoided relegation, underlining how narrow Spurs’ escape has been.

Back-to-back 17th-place finishes have left Tottenham supporters angry, despite survival. Spurs have not ended so low in consecutive seasons since the period from 1912-13 to 1914-15, when they finished 17th, 17th and 20th. The current run highlights how far the club has slipped in league performance compared with recent Premier League seasons.

Van de Ven praised the backing from the stands, suggesting the atmosphere influenced the result. "I think everyone was behind us today and we played with 12 men on the pitch, a relieved Van de Ven told BBC Match of the Day after full-time. Everton were unbelievable, they kept pushing us and we needed to defend, but [the fans] kept pushing, I think they were a massive part of the win."

Asked about the wider season, van de Ven did not hide frustration. "It is unacceptable that the last game we played this season, we were playing for relegation. This club has some unbelievable players. It was embarrassing to let it come to the final day, but we did it and that is what is important."

Van de Ven explained how draining the schedule has been personally, after starting almost every game in this Premier League relegation fight. "I was emotional at the final whistle, it has been a tough season for me personally as well. I played almost every game and I have suffered a lot. The emotions are really happy, but we must not let it happen again."

Set-pieces played a crucial role in Tottenham’s survival push. Spurs scored 19 Premier League goals from dead-ball situations, excluding penalties, their highest tally in a single season since 1999-00, when they managed 20. Palhinha’s winning goal against Everton came from a corner and underlined how important those routines were for the team.

Palhinha’s impact extended beyond the final day, with goals that directly secured five league points for Tottenham during 2025-26, the joint-highest contribution by any Spurs player along with Richarlison. The combination of effective set-pieces, a narrow home victory over Everton and heavy pressure from West Ham’s result meant Tottenham survived another Premier League relegation battle, despite finishing 17th again.
