Tottenham Relegation Threat: Gary Neville Says It Would Be The Shock Of The Century

Gary Neville argues that relegation for Tottenham would be the shock of the century, though he believes they can avoid the drop. After a 4-1 loss to Arsenal, Spurs face a tough run, needing improved consistency and resilience to climb out of the relegation positions.

Gary Neville believes Tottenham face a genuine fight to stay in the Premier League, yet still expects survival, saying it "would be the shock of the century" if relegation happens. Neville accepts the threat is real after a poor run this season, but thinks the squad retains enough quality and character to avoid dropping into the Championship.

Spurs lose heavily in the north London derby, with Arsenal winning 4-1 and Igor Tudor suffering defeat in the first match in charge. Eberechi Eze scores twice, Viktor Gyokeres also hits a double, and Randal Kolo Muani provides Tottenham’s only goal, with a second effort ruled out for a foul on Gabriel Magalhaes.

Tottenham Relegation Shock

That result leaves Tottenham 16th after 27 Premier League fixtures, only four points clear of the relegation places. Spurs are the last winless side in the division in 2026, with nine league games bringing four draws and five losses. The team now sit in a congested lower half, where one bad week can pull clubs deeper into danger.

Data from the Opta supercomputer suggests the probability of relegation remains relatively low, yet still meaningful. Spurs are given a 4.4% chance of going down this season, with 16th place rated as their most likely final position at 25.2%. The numbers underline a difficult campaign, but also suggest survival remains the expected outcome.

Only Wolves, with 10 home losses, have lost more league matches on their own ground in Europe’s top five competitions this season. Spurs suffer eight home defeats and struggle to build any momentum. The pattern of results raises concern among supporters, who have seen previous seasons drift without a sustained challenge at either end.

Neville argues this situation is no longer a one-off. He points out that Tottenham escape danger last season while juggling Europa League commitments, yet never seem fully stable. Across two consecutive campaigns, Neville sees similar issues and suggests the league table now reflects deeper problems in performance and planning at the club.

"Tottenham are in trouble," he said on Sky Sports. "Last season, they really skirted with it a little bit, but they were always clear of it, and they were managing the Europa League games and just getting enough points. You never really felt they were going to go down. This season, they've got some real work to do, and they better do it quickly. I watch West Ham, I watch Nottingham Forest, and they've got something about them that you think they're going to pick up points. It's not going to be the case that Tottenham can just sit there and think that this is just going to happen they're going to have to work hard to get out of this mess."

Neville highlights how other sides around the bottom, such as West Ham and Nottingham Forest, appear capable of grinding out results. That comparison puts further pressure on Tottenham to respond. Neville notes that Spurs cannot rely on reputation or past league finishes, and must match the intensity of nearby rivals in every fixture.

"It's unthinkable. But on the football side of it, they've underdelivered for a number of years, they've never found the formula to get it right, and this is the second season on the trot that they're in this type of position. It's not a fluke anymore. This is a pattern of what you are, and it would be the shock of the century. It would be absolutely mind-blowing to think that they could disappear out of this league, but I don't think they will. They've shown an attitude against Arsenal for 55, 60 minutes. They were just beaten in the end by a better team. They have shown a little bit of ruggedness that they will need. But when the cameras are off, and they're playing against the team in mid-table next week and the week afterand maybe it's a little bit less motivation because of the fact of what the fixture isare they going to be as rugged, as dogged, as hardworking and as pressurising? They're going to need to be. Because if you're just a few per cent off it in this league, you will get done."

Neville’s assessment leaves Tottenham facing a harsh reality. The team show spirit in spells, including long periods against Arsenal, yet overall consistency is missing. With fixtures remaining against direct rivals and mid-table opponents, Spurs must match that "ruggedness" every week if the club is to stay clear of a relegation outcome that Neville still regards as highly unlikely.
