Sandro Tonali Joins Tottenham In Club-Record £100m Signing

Tottenham have confirmed the club-record signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a transfer that could reach 100m, with the Italy midfielder agreeing a reported six-year contract as Roberto De Zerbi reshapes a team that finished only two points above the Premier League relegation places last season.

Tonali is set to anchor a rebuilt 185m midfield partnership after Tottenham also brought in Mateus Fernandes from relegated rivals West Ham, while Jan Paul van Hecke has arrived from Brighton for 50m and defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka have joined on free transfers.

Tonali seals club-record move to Spurs

The 26-year-old is viewed inside the club as a key figure in a push towards the upper end of the table next season, and Tonali described feeling an instant connection with Tottenham after meeting staff and touring the facilities before finalising the move from Newcastle United.

The Italy international said: I'm very happy to be here. When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs [competing to sign me]... but there was only one. I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham. I've played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere made by great fans. I can't wait to start the season.

Tonali previously left Serie A side AC Milan for Newcastle in 2023 and made 110 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists, and also helped Newcastle defeat Liverpool 2-1 in the 2024-25 EFL Cup final to end the club's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

De Zerbi expects Tonali to become one of the main reference points in Tottenham's system, both in and out of possession, and the head coach has spoken about tracking the midfielder's progress since early days in Italy before moving to secure the deal this summer.

De Zerbi said: Sandro is a special player and a great signing for our club. I have followed him for a long time, as he came through the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia, and I'm so happy to be working with him now. Given his qualities, there was a lot of interest in Sandro this summer. However, he was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team.

Sandro Tonali Tottenham transfer backed by statistics

In the Premier League last season for Newcastle, Tonali played 35 matches and started 31, registering two assists without scoring, while creating 32 chances, a total only bettered by Bruno Guimaraes with 45 opportunities for Eddie Howe's team during the campaign.

Tonali also completed 1,319 successful passes in league play, the second-highest figure in the Newcastle squad behind centre-back Malick Thiaw on 1,519, numbers that underline Tonali's importance in circulating possession and progressing the ball from deeper midfield areas.

Tottenham avoided relegation on the final day last season with a 1-0 victory over Everton, finishing two points clear of the drop, and the addition of Tonali, alongside Fernandes and the other new signings, indicates a clear intention to move away from survival battles and compete closer to the European positions.

With a record fee committed to Tonali, significant investment alongside in midfield and several experienced arrivals in defence and goal, Tottenham enter the new campaign with a transformed core group and a defined strategy built around Tonali's passing range, work rate and experience at both domestic and European levels.
