Tottenham Hotspur have successfully signed Bayern Munich's Mathys Tel on loan for the 2024-25 season. The 19-year-old forward was also pursued by Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. Initially hesitant, Tel decided to join Spurs to strengthen their attack. Tottenham can make the deal permanent next summer for £55 million if he performs well.
Tel began his career at Rennes in Ligue 1, debuting at just 16 years and 110 days old against Brest. This made him the youngest player to feature for the club in a top-flight match, surpassing Eduardo Camavinga's record. He played ten senior games for Rennes before moving to Bayern Munich in 2022 for a reported fee of £28.5 million.

At Bayern, Tel scored his first goal in a 5-0 DFB-Pokal victory over Viktoria Koln, becoming the club's youngest competitive goalscorer at 17 years and 126 days old. Under Thomas Tuchel in the 2023-24 season, he had his best scoring run with ten goals and six assists in 41 matches across all competitions.
This season under Vincent Kompany, however, Tel has struggled for game time, making only 14 appearances with just four starts and accumulating only 458 minutes on the pitch. Despite this limited playtime, Tottenham sees potential in him as they face injury challenges among their forwards.
Tel is Tottenham's fourth acquisition this January after Antonin Kinsky and Min-hyeok Yang joined permanently. Yang has since been loaned to QPR. Additionally, Lens defender Kevin Danso arrived on a temporary basis until season's end.
The move provides manager Ange Postecoglou with another attacking option amid injuries to Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, and Wilson Odobert that have affected Spurs' campaign. A debut for Tel might be possible in Sunday's FA Cup match against Aston Villa if international clearance and a work permit are secured promptly.
