Trent Alexander-Arnold Pays Tribute To Diogo Jota During Club World Cup Victory Against Borussia Dortmund

In a heartfelt moment, Trent Alexander-Arnold recalls his close friendship with Diogo Jota during Real Madrid's Club World Cup win over Borussia Dortmund. He reflects on the challenges of focusing on the match amid personal loss.

Trent Alexander-Arnold expressed that Diogo Jota's presence was felt during Real Madrid's intense Club World Cup triumph over Borussia Dortmund. Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain on Thursday morning. Kylian Mbappe, who netted the decisive goal in Real Madrid's 3-2 victory, honoured Jota by displaying the number 20, which was Jota's number at Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold contributed significantly by delivering the cross for Fran Garcia’s first-half goal. Despite the emotional challenge, he focused on his role to help his team succeed. "I still had a job to do - to try and perform for the team and help them win the game, no matter how difficult it was," he shared with DAZN. He acknowledged the difficulty but felt Jota would have wanted him to persevere.

Julian Brandt reflected on Dortmund’s sluggish start, which hindered their ability to challenge Madrid effectively. Maximilian Beier and Serhou Guirassy scored late goals, with Guirassy converting a penalty after being fouled by Dean Huijsen, who received a red card. Marcel Sabitzer nearly forced extra time with a last-second attempt saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Dortmund managed 1.4 expected goals (xG) from 12 shots, with 1.2 xG coming in the second half from nine attempts and four on target. Their late surge almost led to extra time, but Brandt admitted it was insufficient. "It got really exciting at the end. We were so close," he stated. However, their first-half performance lacked urgency.

Waldemar Anton highlighted Dortmund’s resilience despite their early setbacks against Real Madrid. "After we got the goal back, we tried to push for the next one," Anton remarked. He praised their determination and noted Thibaut Courtois' remarkable save at the end as crucial.

Anton acknowledged that conceding two early goals showed too much respect for their opponents but valued the experience gained from participating in the Club World Cup. He believed that with more luck, they might have advanced further in the tournament.

Alexander-Arnold reminisced about his five years sharing a dressing room with Jota, cherishing memories both on and off the field. He emphasised that Jota will always be remembered for his exceptional character and talent as both a player and person.
