Trent Alexander-Arnold Reflects On His Incredible Real Madrid Debut Against Al-Hilal

In his debut for Real Madrid, Trent Alexander-Arnold played in a 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup. He noted positives despite the result and acknowledged areas for improvement.

Trent Alexander-Arnold expressed his delight at making his Real Madrid debut, describing it as an incredible experience. He played in their 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup. The match took place at Hard Rock Stadium, where he was substituted for Lucas Vazquez after just over an hour of play.

Gonzalo Garcia scored first for Xabi Alonso's team in the 34th minute. However, Ruben Neves equalised with a penalty just before halftime. Despite Federico Valverde having a chance to win it with a penalty in stoppage time, Yassine Bounou made a crucial save.

Alexander-Arnold's Incredible Real Madrid Debut

Alexander-Arnold had a mixed performance, facing challenges from Al-Hilal's Salem Al Dawsari but also creating chances for Madrid. He led his team with 12 final third entries and shared the top spot for total crosses with Arda Guler, both achieving five. Only Valverde surpassed him in final third passes, completing 17 compared to Alexander-Arnold's 16.

Despite losing possession 12 times, more than any other Madrid player, Alexander-Arnold remained positive about the experience. "It's an incredible day," he said on Channel 5. "It's something almost every player dreams of." He acknowledged some disappointment over not winning but emphasised the importance of having a winning mentality at Real Madrid.

The England international praised the support from Madrid fans since joining from Liverpool. He also noted areas for improvement within the team. Xabi Alonso became only the fourth manager to draw on his Los Blancos debut across all competitions, following Fabio Capello in 1996, Jose Mourinho in 2010, and Rafael Benitez in 2015.

Madrid dominated match statistics with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.64 from their 19 shots compared to Al-Hilal's xG of 1.88 from 13 attempts. "In the second half we kept the ball really well - that is what we lacked in the first half," Alexander-Arnold added.

Looking Ahead to Upcoming Matches

The heat made ball retention crucial during the game, according to Alexander-Arnold. He noted that despite being around Al-Hilal's box frequently, they couldn't secure a win but saw positives to build on for future matches. Real Madrid will face Pachuca next in their Club World Cup group game on Sunday before concluding their Group H campaign against Red Bull Salzburg.

When asked about learning Spanish after speaking fluently during his unveiling last week, Alexander-Arnold replied: "Not too long (learning Spanish), it was something that was important." He stressed adapting quickly to embrace the culture and give himself the best start possible in a new city and team.
