The much-awaited criminal trial of the medical professionals accused of negligence in the death of Argentine football icon Diego Maradona has been delayed once again. Initially set for next month, the trial has now been postponed to March 11, 2025, according to a ruling reported by AFP. This marks the second postponement, as the trial was previously delayed in May.
Diego Maradona, revered as one of the greatest footballers in history, passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60. At the time of his death, Maradona was recovering from brain surgery to a blood clot on the brain. His death came after years of battling cocaine and alcohol addiction, which significantly impacted his health.

Maradona was found lifeless in his bed just two weeks after being discharged from the hospital. He had been staying in a rented house in an upscale neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The reason revealed for the cause of death was a heart attack.
In 2023, an Argentine appeals court confirmed that eight medical professionals, including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, would stand trial for their roles in Maradona's death. Prosecutors allege that these medical practitioners provided "reckless" and "deficient" treatment during Maradona's post-operative care at home. The group of medics is accused of failing to properly attend to Maradona's health, leading to his death.
A 2021 panel of 20 medical experts, convened by Argentina's public prosecutor, concluded that Maradona's death was preventable. The panel found that with appropriate care in a suitable medical facility, Maradona "would have had a better chance of survival." This report became a crucial element in the charges brought against the medical staff. (As reported by NDTV).
While the main trial involving seven of the eight accused medics has been pushed to March 2025, the case of one of the nurses, Gisela Dahiana Madrid, will proceed separately. She has requested a jury trial, which is scheduled to begin on October 2, 2024.
The accused medical professionals face severe legal consequences. If found guilty, they could receive prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years, depending on the degree of negligence determined by the court.
The delay in the trial has only intensified public interest and scrutiny as the world waits to see the outcome of the legal proceedings. For many, the trial represents a chance to seek justice for the tragic and controversial death of a football legend who transcended the sport.
This case continues to stir emotions in Argentina and around the world, with Maradona's death remaining a subject of both sorrow and controversy.
