Trinity Rodman Captaincy Debut Eases Weight Off Her Shoulders, Says Emma Hayes

Emma Hayes says Trinity Rodman’s first game as USWNT captain is a weight off her shoulders following a 6-0 victory over Paraguay. Rodman scored after half-time as the USA dominated with 19 shots and a strong second-half display, marking a fresh start for the forward amid contract news with Washington Spirit.

Trinity Rodman marked a major step in a new United States cycle by scoring as captain in a 6-0 win over Paraguay, easing recent pressure after intense focus on contract talks and leadership changes while Emma Hayes highlighted how the performance and result in Los Angeles reflected a calmer mindset for both Rodman and the wider squad.

The friendly was one-sided throughout, with the USA creating chances almost at will and finishing the night with 19 attempts to Paraguay’s two, while five of the six goals arrived after half-time as sharper attacking play, better movement and more accurate shooting turned sustained pressure into a heavy scoreline against clearly overmatched opposition.

Rodman captaincy debut eases pressure

Rodman’s key moment came in the second half when Tara Rudd clipped a precise ball over the defence, Rodman sprinted clear, controlled neatly and passed the ball into the net, a composed finish that gave the new captain a first international goal since April 2025, when Rodman struck in a 2-0 victory over Brazil.

The captain’s armband moved to Rodman for the first time because regular skipper Lindsey Horan was absent, with Horan and a group of Europe-based players not selected for this camp, and Hayes used the opportunity to test new leadership options while also assessing how Rodman handled additional responsibility in a high-profile home fixture.

The goal closed a busy week for Rodman, who ended speculation about a possible move by signing a new three-year contract with Washington Spirit that runs through 2028 and, according to club announcements, makes Rodman the highest-paid female footballer in the world, a deal Hayes believes has helped remove uncertainty from Rodman’s daily routine.

Reflecting on that change, Hayes said: "She's ready to move forward, and I think today symbolises that, Hayes said of Rodman. Like, it's a fresh year, it's a fresh start for her. She's settled. She's happy. I think knowing her future is a big weight off of her shoulders." Hayes then watched Rodman celebrate by dancing in front of the bench, a routine the coach politely declined to copy, saying: "She did it, and I couldn't quite see, then she came over to me. She asked me to mirror it, and I said, 'I'm 49 years of age. There's no chance I'm doing that!'"

Trinity Rodman captain performance backed by dominant USA stats

Statistically, Hayes’ team controlled every phase, posting 3.61 expected goals compared with Paraguay’s 0.02, yet the sharpest finishing arrived late, as the USA hit the target five times from nine attempts after the break, having tested the goalkeeper only three times from 10 first-half shots despite constant territory and possession.

Rodman detailed the goal and early tension when speaking to TNT Sports, saying: "The whole game, I was telling Tara, 'Please, just play one over the top. Come on. We got this'. She played a perfect little ball, I cut it back, and then, when it went in, I was, like, 'Alright, it's my time to shine'. In the first half, there were definitely nerves. We were rushing a lot. I think there was almost too much space and, as a result, we were overthinking things." For Hayes and Rodman, the convincing display, the contract resolution and the successful first outing as captain all pointed to a more settled period ahead for the USA forward and the national team.
