Thomas Tuchel's leadership and calmness under pressure are seen as vital for England's success, according to Glen Johnson. Tuchel began his tenure with victories in World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia, securing clean sheets in both matches. England will next face Andorra on June 7, followed by a friendly against Senegal three days later.
Tuchel is the third foreign coach to lead England, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. His appointment was based on his club-level achievements with Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. The Football Association has given him an 18-month contract to guide England through the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Johnson, who earned 54 caps for England, believes Tuchel's trophy-winning experience is crucial for the team's future success. "From Chelsea, yes, but not since the England camp," Johnson told Stats Perform when asked about discussing Tuchel's appointment with former teammates. "Obviously, they've only just finished, haven't they? But yeah, he's a likeable guy."
Tuchel's first squad selection included returns for Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford. Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly and Newcastle United's Dan Burn were also called up for the first time. Lewis-Skelly scored against Albania, becoming the third-youngest scorer for England after Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen.
Johnson commented on the squad's performance: "It's a nice easy way out of the door. But I think some of the lads looked great." He added that facing stronger opponents would reveal more about the team’s capabilities.
Chelsea captain Reece James made a strong comeback to international football with a free-kick goal against Latvia. Injuries have plagued James recently, but he seized his chance with Trent Alexander-Arnold sidelined due to an ankle injury. During Gareth Southgate’s tenure, Kyle Walker was often preferred at right-back.
Johnson believes James should be Tuchel’s first choice if he remains fit: "Yeah, right up there. I'm a big fan." He acknowledged that while all three players are talented, James offers a more complete skill set.
The upcoming matches will further test Tuchel’s strategies and squad choices as he aims to build on his initial successes with England. His ability to manage high-pressure situations could be key in leading the team to future triumphs.
