Tuchel Defends Right-Back Choices After James Injury During World Cup Group Stage

Thomas Tuchel insists England remain well prepared for Panama, even though Reece James will miss the match and the round of 32. The right-back has a minor hamstring injury, leaving England without the first-choice option on that flank for the next fixtures.

England are already through from Group L, yet Tuchel still sees the Panama game as important. Depending on Ghana’s meeting with Croatia, England may still need a win to confirm top spot and strengthen momentum heading into the knockout phase.

Tuchel defends right-back choices

Tuchel confirmed that James’ problem arrived without warning, despite a history of fitness setbacks. Since debuting for Chelsea, James has been available for only 51% of potential minutes. The defender started England’s first two Group L games before this latest issue ruled James out.

Explaining the situation, Tuchel said: "Reece has a minor hamstring issue, Tuchel said. He was not able to train the last two days. He is now in an accelerated rehabilitation programme. We take it game by game but we strongly believe he will be available for us in the tournament. We have hopes [James will be fit] for the next match. It mightbe a tight one but [the] hopes are still alive. Nobody could see that coming. Reece was in good shape and felt very good. So it is a bit unlucky."

James’ absence adds to earlier disruption at right-back, after Tino Livramento withdrew before England’s opener. Trevoh Chalobah then entered the squad instead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, while James Garner also missed out. Djed Spence is available, but using Spence at right-back would leave only Nico O’Reilly on the opposite side.

Tuchel also highlighted positional cover in central defenders. Ezri Konsa and John Stones have both played at right-back during their careers. Tuchel said: "Ezri Konsa played in the position for us on a high level. It is still no problem. We would love to have Reece, he is a key player. We would love to have him available but we will find solutions. That's what we do. It is a short period of time. It is a tournament. We will find solutions."

There was better news regarding midfield depth. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson had been carrying minor knocks after the last match but have now recovered. Tuchel confirmed the wider squad picture, saying: "They both had minor issues after the match but had enough time to recover. So everyone but Reece James is available and ready to go, Tuchel said."

Thomas Tuchel, Reece James and England approach to Panama test

Tuchel expects a tight contest against Panama, who defended stubbornly against Ghana and Croatia. Tuchel said: "It is a difficult match against a team that is so difficult to break down, said Tuchel, whose team were lacklustre against a well-drilled Ghana team on Tuesday."

Tuchel pointed out Panama’s record for limiting chances. Tuchel said: "They hardly allowed any chances. They conceded in the 95th minute against Ghana in a counter-attack when they tried to score the winner and they conceded two shots on target against Croatia. That's what we expect. It is a complex game. We expect them from time to time to defend in a deep block and we have to try to break it down, accelerate the game in the right moments."

The tactical challenge comes with extra pressure on England’s attack and wide players, especially without James overlapping. Tuchel must balance defensive security and creativity from full-back areas, while keeping the team fresh for the round of 32 that James will also miss through the current hamstring concern.

Harry Kane is closing on another record that could influence England’s attacking mindset. Kane scored a hat-trick, including two penalties, when England last met Panama at the 2018 World Cup. Kane now requires one more goal to overtake Gary Lineker as England’s top World Cup scorer.

Tuchel’s leadership has been a recurring theme around this squad. The national team account recently shared a message on social media:

That message underlined Tuchel’s focus on adapting within tournament football and dealing with short preparation windows.

England now move towards the Panama match with one major absentee yet almost full availability elsewhere. Tuchel must solve the right-back puzzle without James while managing expectations around Kane’s World Cup record chase and the race to finish first in Group L.
