Harry Maguire faces a challenge to secure a World Cup place after Thomas Tuchel admitted other defenders are currently ahead in the England squad picture. Maguire impressed on return for the Three Lions against Uruguay, yet Tuchel highlighted strong competition at centre-back and stressed that selection for the tournament will depend on profile, mobility and tactical needs.
Tuchel praised Maguire’s display in the 1-1 draw at Wembley, but explained that Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Trevoh Chalobah and John Stones are all viewed as being in front for starting roles. Maguire, now 33, stays with the group for further assessment, with Tuchel emphasising different attributes required across the defensive unit.

The updated England squad for the friendly against Japan was confirmed on Saturday, with 27 players preparing for the fixture at Wembley. Changes followed the Uruguay game, as injuries and club-related decisions reshaped the camp. The Three Lions continue to balance preparation for the World Cup with player fitness and workload management across key Premier League clubs.
Several players have left the latest England squad. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Aaron Ramsdale and Fikayo Tomori departed the camp. Noni Madueke and Adam Wharton returned to Arsenal and Crystal Palace, respectively, after picking up knocks. John Stones went back to Manchester City, while Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka headed to Arsenal for medical checks.
The national team also welcomed an 11-player group that only linked up with the Three Lions squad on Friday. Harry Kane, Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Nico O’Reilly, Dean Henderson, Morgan Rogers, Konsa and Guehi joined alongside Rice and Saka. These arrivals boosted numbers ahead of the Japan match, following various withdrawals.

James Garner, who delivered a standout performance against Uruguay, kept a place in the reduced 27-player England squad. Garner was named Player of the Match on senior debut in the 1-1 draw, strengthening a case for more minutes. Tuchel’s staff can now assess how Garner adapts within the group during the build-up to the Japan friendly.
Tuchel made clear that Maguire still offers useful qualities despite falling behind rivals. The England head coach views Maguire as particularly valuable in tournament scenarios. Set-pieces, aerial duels and late defensive work were highlighted as areas where Maguire could make a targeted impact, even if not first choice when everyone is available.
As quoted by Mail Sport, Tuchel said: I haven't changed my mind [on Maguire],but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile. I see Ezri Konsa ahead. I seeMarc Guehiahead. It's no secret. I see Trevoh Chalobah, on the level of mobility, was slightly ahead of him. Also, John Stones, but he had injuries. I needed to meet [Maguire] in person to see how he acts within the group. It will be interesting now to see how he acts within the group. He will stay with us. He has an asset that can also be super-important in a tournament, in knockout football, in defending a lead and chasing a game with crosses and long throw-ins and set-pieces. I got exactly what I thought (against Uruguay). Solid, solid central-defender play. That's what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and the weapon for set-pieces.
Tuchel underlined that personal interaction with Maguire was important before making any World Cup decisions. The coach wanted to watch how Maguire behaves within the England squad day to day. That includes training habits, leadership around the group and response to pressure, as competition intensifies among the Three Lions defenders.
The friendly against Uruguay provided another chance for Tuchel to examine tactical options. Maguire delivered what Tuchel expected, offering reliable central defending and calm distribution from the back. The 1-1 result also allowed staff to observe how newer faces, such as Garner, reacted under pressure at Wembley against strong South American opposition.
England’s preparations now move towards facing Japan, with the revised 27-player England squad continuing work at Wembley. The coaching staff must weigh form, fitness and tactical balance before final World Cup calls. For Maguire, each training session and appearance looks important, as Tuchel has clearly stated that several defenders currently stand ahead in the Three Lions hierarchy.
