Tuchel Seeks More From England After Solid Debut Win Against Albania In World Cup Qualifiers

England secured a 2-0 victory over Albania in Thomas Tuchel's debut as manager. The match showcased young talent and highlighted areas for improvement ahead of the upcoming game against Latvia.

The Thomas Tuchel era for England's national football team began with a steady 2-0 victory over Albania, marking the start of their 2026 World Cup qualifying journey. While Tuchel largely depended on players from Gareth Southgate's tenure, he surprised many by including Dan Burn and Myles Lewis-Skelly in the lineup. Lewis-Skelly made an immediate impact, scoring in the 20th minute after receiving a pass from Jude Bellingham.

At just 18 years and 176 days old, Lewis-Skelly became the youngest player to score on his senior England debut, surpassing Marcus Rashford's previous record. Harry Kane added another goal, making Tuchel the 11th consecutive permanent England manager to win his first match. With Serbia starting their campaign later, England has a chance to widen the gap with their Group K rivals.

Tuchel Aims for Improvement After England Win

England is heavily favoured against Latvia, ranked 140th globally. In simulations by Opta's supercomputer, England won 94% of matches against Latvia. The Three Lions have not lost in their last 32 World Cup qualifiers, boasting 24 wins and eight draws. Meanwhile, Latvia is unbeaten in three qualifiers but faces a tough challenge at Wembley.

Latvia's recent form includes a win over Andorra and a draw with Norway. Despite not qualifying for major tournaments since Euro 2004, they have shown resilience in recent matches. Under coach Paolo Nicolato, they hope to frustrate England with a defensive setup similar to Albania's approach.

Before facing Albania, there was curiosity about how Tuchel would set up his team. He aimed for a dynamic style akin to Premier League play but faced challenges due to Albania's defensive tactics. Despite this, England completed an impressive 437 passes in the first half alone.

By full-time, they had completed 811 out of 863 passes—one of their highest totals in World Cup qualifiers. However, Tuchel expressed a need for more decisive play from wingers like Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden.

Challenges for Key Players

Rashford attempted more dribbles than anyone else against Albania but lacked end product. With Anthony Gordon injured, Rashford may get another chance against Latvia but must improve his finishing. Foden has struggled recently for England and faces competition from players like Jarrod Bowen and Morgan Rogers.

Bowen has created numerous chances in the Premier League this season, while Rogers leads in take-ons alongside Omari Hutchinson. These options provide Tuchel with alternatives if Foden continues to underperform.

Latvia's Defensive Strategy

This will be Latvia's first encounter with England as they begin their qualification journey under Nicolato. They started well with a win over Andorra but have historically struggled in major tournaments. Their defence will be tested at Wembley as they aim to contain England’s attack.

Nicolato used three central defenders against Andorra and may employ a similar strategy against England’s formidable forwards. Patience will be key for both teams as Latvia seeks to disrupt England’s rhythm.

Players to Watch: Kane and Gutkovskis

Kane scored his 70th international goal against Albania and is among elite company globally with this achievement. He has consistently performed well under different managers and remains crucial for England’s success.

For Latvia, Vladislavs Gutkovskis is pivotal despite not scoring since September 2022 internationally. His past performances show potential; however, he faces an uphill battle against England’s defence on Monday.

The upcoming match between England and Latvia promises intrigue as both teams bring unique challenges and strengths into play at Wembley Stadium.
