Türkiye Qualifies For World Cup By Beating Kosovo As Akturkoglu Secures 24-Year Wait

Turkiye secured a long-awaited World Cup return with a 1-0 victory over Kosovo in the qualification play-off final, as Kerem Akturkoglu struck the decisive goal. The win ended a 24-year absence from the tournament and confirmed Turkiye’s place at the 2026 World Cup.

The result booked Turkiye into Group D, where the national team will meet the United States, Paraguay and Australia in North America. Their last appearance at a World Cup finals came in 2002, when Turkiye claimed third place after a notable run through the knockout rounds.

Türkiye seals World Cup spot with Akturkoglu winner

Akturkoglu, starting in attack for Turkiye, produced the key moment early in the second half. The Fenerbahce forward reacted quickest in the 53rd minute, steering a loose ball into the bottom-left corner and sparking celebrations among the travelling Turkiye supporters inside Stadiumi Fadil Vokrri.

Kosovo 1.03 11 2
Turkiye 1.21 12 2

Earlier, the first half showed how fine the margins were. Turkiye began aggressively, with Kenan Yildiz, Hakan Calhanoglu and Akturkoglu all forcing early efforts. Yet Kosovo almost struck first when Fisnik Asllani’s strike was tipped onto the crossbar, offering a warning to Turkiye’s defence.

Tempers flared shortly before half-time when Akturkoglu and Albian Hajdari clashed, lifting the noise inside the stadium. That intensity carried into the second period, where Orkun Kokcu’s mishit attempt fell kindly for Akturkoglu, whose composed finish gave Turkiye control of the contest.

Turkiye World Cup charge driven by Guler and Yildiz

After the breakthrough, Turkiye searched for a second goal to close out the tie. Yildiz almost doubled the advantage after the hour, bending a shot towards the far corner, but Kosovo goalkeeper Arijanet Muric pushed the curling effort to safety with a strong save.

Kosovo responded with late pressure, chasing extra time as Turkiye dropped deeper. Their clearest opening fell to Florent Muslija on the edge of the area, yet the low strike drifted just past the left post, leaving the hosts short and confirming Turkiye’s progression.

The data underlined how narrow the match was, with both teams recording two efforts on target and similar xG values. Real Madrid’s Arda Guler created three chances, the most on the pitch, while Juventus forward Yildiz led all players for completed dribbles with four and touches in the box with 10.

Turkiye’s victory completed a significant milestone, ending a 24-year wait for a World Cup appearance and setting up meetings with the United States, Paraguay and Australia. The performance in Kosovo, shaped by Akturkoglu’s goal and strong displays from Guler and Yildiz, secured Turkiye’s return to football’s biggest stage.
