UCL 2016/17: AS Monaco beat Tottenham 2-1

By Ians English

London, Sep 15: Two goals in the opening 31 minutes laid the foundation for French football side Monaco to beat England's Tottenham 2-1 in a Champions League match at the Wembley stadium.

Tottenham began purposefully but were rocked when Bernardo Silva hammered in a drive off the far upright corner of the net from a Monaco counter-attack in the 15th-minute here on Wednesday.

Thomas Lemar, a fifth-minute substitute for Nabil Dirar, then doubled the lead after Djibril Sidibe's cross fell on his path.

Tottenham secured a foothold when Toby Alderweireld thumped in a header from Erik Lamela's corner on the stroke of half-time.

They then lay siege to the visitors' goal after the restart.

The French side were under pressure from then on but held firm to claim all the three points in the Group E match.
