UEFA Champions League 2012-13 Group Stage Results - Oct 23 | Oct 24
Chelsea suffered a huge setback after losing to group E leaders Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday. The reigning champions are currently second in the table only a point above Juventus.
The Blues are undefeated in the Premier League but failed to carry that impressive form into Europe's biggest club competition. The deadly trio of Juan Mata, Oscar and Eden Hazard could not penetrate Shakthar's tight defence while striker Fernando Torres failed yet again.
One point in three games and Manchester City are literally out the UEFA Champions League. The English champions were outclassed at the Amsterdam Arena losing 3-1 against Ajax. Bottom of the table in so-called "Group of Death" Roberto Mancini's 'millionaires' are the weakest amongst Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax.
City's broken defence cost them a place in the last-16 and now need a miracle to go through. Real Madrid's shock loss at Dortmund has made it even more difficult for the City.
Arsenal's dip in form is evident this season, suffering back to back defeats. As in previous seasons, the Gunner have suffered a similar fate, showing class and fluency at the start, then struggling to maintain that impressive run. The loss to Chelsea at the Emirates marked their downfall which continued with another defeat to Norwich City.
Their impressive record at home against non-English opponents ended on Wednesday when Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Ibrahim Afellay scored two second-half goals. The Germans are on top of group B, only a point above the Gunners with seven points.
Meanwhile, Manchester United fought back to beat Sporting Braga 2-1 at Old Trafford. A brace from Javier Hernandez and a scrappy goal from centre-back Jonny Evans cancelled Braga captain Alan's double in the opening 20 minutes. However, United have defensive problems ahead of the away clash at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea. The Red Devils have conceded goals in the last four out of five games.
