The group stages of the UEFA Champions League concluded on Wednesday as the newly expanded continental competition is now set to enter its knockout phases.
The 2024-25 UEFA Champions League marks a revolutionary shift in the tournament's structure, replacing the traditional group stage with a single 36-team league format. This overhaul, designed to increase competition and excitement, ensures each team plays eight matches against different opponents, rather than the previous six against three fixed teams.

Under the new format, teams are ranked in a single league table. The top eight teams qualify directly for the Round of 16, while those placed 9th to 24th enter a two-legged play-off to secure their knockout stage spots.
Another major innovation is the expanded match schedule, stretching across ten weeks instead of the previous six.
As the group stages conclude, the top 8 teams have advanced straight to the Round of 16, whereas the 9th to 24th placed teams are set to gear up for the playoffs.
Liverpool have progressed to the Round of 16 as the top-placed team in the points table. The Reds finished first among the 36 clubs with an excellent 21 points after 8 group stage matches. Barcelona, Arsenal are also through to the knockouts directly and won't have to face the uncertainties of playoffs
Here are the 8 clubs who have directly progressed to the Round of 16-
Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Aston Villa.
16 teams have progressed to the playoffs and will be taking on each other in a two-legged affair. The winners of the playoffs will then be drawn against the top eight teams for the Round of 16. As per the latest system, the group stage positions will determine the opponents in the playoffs and the other knockout rounds.
The teams which have advanced to the playoff round are-
Atalanta (9th), Dortmund (10th), Real Madrid (11th), Bayern Munich (12th), AC Milan (13th), PSV Eindhoven (14th), PSG (15th), Benfica (16th), Monaco (17th), Stade Brest (18th), Feyenoord (19th), Juventus (20th), Celtic (21st), Man City (22nd), Sporting CP (23rd) and Club Brugge (24th).
