UK Police apologises for humiliation caused to Everton's 'black'footballer Anichebe

By Super Admin

London, Mar.17 (ANI): Everton's black football star Victor Anichebe has received a personal apology from a police chief after he was questioned by officers while looking in a jewellery shop window.

The 20-year-old Everton striker was window shopping with a friend in Knutsford town centre last Wednesday when officers from Cheshire Police demanded to know what they were doing.

CCTV operators, who thought that the Nigerian-born player and his friend were acting suspiciously, directed police to the scene, the Telegraph reports.

Anichebe described the incident as "highly embarrassing and totally humiliating" and said he believed they had been stopped because they were black.

The force's Assistant Chief Constable, Garry Shewan, yesterday visited Anichebe at his home to apologize over the incident.

A spokeswoman said: "Cheshire Constabulary has apologized publicly for the action taken by the officer in applying the handcuffs in this situation.

"The apology was accepted," she said. (ANI)
