Chhetri Voices Concerns About Uncertainty in Indian Football Ecosystem Amid ISL Pause

The uncertainty surrounding Indian football has become a major concern, according to former captain Sunil Chhetri. The indefinite suspension of the top-tier Indian Super League (ISL) has left the sports community worried and anxious.

Chhetri, who plays for Bengaluru FC, shared that he has been receiving numerous calls and messages about the sport's future in India.

Chhetri Raises Alarm on Indian Football Uncertainty

Chhetri expressed his concerns on X, stating that while he initially worried about his own career, conversations with players from various clubs highlighted a bigger issue.

"The current situation that Indian football finds itself in is very concerning," he noted. He mentioned receiving messages from players, staff, and others involved in the sport, all expressing their fears about the ongoing uncertainty.

ISL Suspension and Legal Challenges

The ISL's 2025-26 season was put on hold due to unresolved issues with the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between event organisers and the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

The league typically runs from September to April, but the current MRA will expire on December 8, 2025. This decision followed a Supreme Court directive instructing AIFF not to negotiate new MRA terms with Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) until a final judgment is reached in the AIFF draft constitution case.

FSDL, AIFF's commercial partner since 2010, signed a 15-year MRA under which it pays AIFF Rs 50 crore annually. In return, FSDL manages and commercialises Indian football, including broadcasting rights and national team management. The AIFF acknowledged ISL's significance but emphasised its obligation to comply with legal directives.

Chhetri's Personal Reflections

Chhetri was on vacation when he first heard about the league's suspension. Initially, he found it amusing as it gave him more time to get fit. However, as the suspension extended indefinitely, his amusement faded. He remains hopeful that efforts are underway to resume the football season soon.

The star player urged everyone involved in Indian football to remain patient and united during this challenging period. "I may not have all the answers," he said, addressing those whose livelihoods depend on football. He encouraged players and staff to stay calm and continue improving their skills.

Hope for Resolution

Chhetri reassured everyone that the football season would eventually resume. He emphasised the importance of sticking together and supporting each other through these uncertain times. "We'll ride this storm together," he concluded, urging everyone to keep training and stay prepared for when football returns.

The ongoing situation highlights the challenges faced by Indian football amid legal complexities. Stakeholders remain hopeful for a resolution that will allow the sport to thrive once again.
