United States Beat Paraguay 4-1 As Balogun Shines In World Cup Opener

Folarin Balogun led the way for the United States, scoring twice in a 4-1 win over Paraguay in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. The co-hosts struck early, dominated long spells, and finished strongly through Giovanni Reyna, while limiting Paraguay’s clear openings and controlling key moments at both ends.

The United States struck first after just seven minutes, when Damian Bobadilla diverted Weston McKennie’s cutback into the Paraguay net. Christian Pulisic had sparked the move by driving between two defenders. The United States then continued to press, with Paraguay’s defence struggling to cope with direct runs and sharp passing in wide areas.

United States stun Paraguay as Balogun shines

Balogun thought a second United States goal had arrived before the half-hour, finishing confidently, but the effort was ruled out. The assistant flagged for offside against Pulisic earlier in the move. That setback did not unsettle the United States attack, which kept stretching Paraguay with quick switches and overlapping runs down both flanks.

The deserved second goal came in the 31st minute. Antonee Robinson released Pulisic down the left, and a deflection on Pulisic’s pass helped the ball fall kindly for Balogun. Balogun guided a low shot into the bottom-right corner, giving Orlando Gill no chance and rewarding sustained United States pressure inside the Paraguay penalty area.

The United States kept creating chances before the break. Chris Richards went close with a header that drifted just wide of the right post from Malik Tillman’s corner. Tillman then fired straight at Gill from close range, but the pressure finally told again when Tillman sent Balogun through for a composed finish into the top-left corner in stoppage time.

Paraguay searched for a response after half-time and finally scored in the 73rd minute. Substitute Mauricio met Julio Enciso’s lay-off with a first-time shot that beat Matt Freese. Despite that goal, the United States limited Paraguay to modest attacking metrics and produced more efficient finishing, as reflected in expected goals figures across the match.

Reyna closed the scoring deep into stoppage time. The midfielder struck a superb trivela finish eight minutes into added time, restoring a three-goal margin. Overall, the United States exceeded an expected goals value of 1.35 with four goals scored, while Paraguay’s attack produced only 0.47 in expected goals despite late pressure in advanced areas.

The table above summarises the headline statistics from the United States victory over Paraguay. It reflects the final scoreline, key expected goals data, and the timing of significant moments, including Balogun’s brace and Reyna’s stoppage-time strike, as the United States began the 2026 World Cup campaign with a convincing attacking display.

United States vs Paraguay World Cup experience and records

Paraguay entered with a notably young group, naming the youngest starting 11 in an opening World Cup match since 1998, with an average age of 28 years and 104 days. In contrast, the United States line-up featured several experienced figures, including Tim Ream, who set a new appearance age landmark for the national team.

Ream, aged 38 years and 250 days, became the oldest player to represent the United States at a World Cup. The co-hosts also started at least one player from each of the five major European leagues for the first time in a World Cup match, underlining the squad’s broad club experience across different competitive environments.

The early breakthrough had historical significance as well. The United States goal at 6:48 was the third fastest scored by a host nation in an opening World Cup match. Only France in 1938, with a goal timed at 0:35, and Germany in 2006, scoring at 5:08, found the net earlier in comparable fixtures.

United States vs Paraguay World Cup impact of Pulisic and Balogun

The United States also led by three goals at half-time in a World Cup match for the first time. Pulisic and Balogun were central to that advantage, combining intelligent movement with sharp finishing. Their link-up play repeatedly unsettled Paraguay and ensured the United States capitalised on promising situations in the final third.

Pulisic, who did not appear after half-time, still produced strong numbers in the opening period. Pulisic completed the joint-most dribbles with three and created the joint-most chances with two. Balogun’s brace meant Balogun became the second United States player to score multiple goals in a single World Cup match against Paraguay, matching Bert Patenaude’s feat from 1930.

Patenaude had scored three goals versus Paraguay in 1930, and Balogun’s double now joins that history. With a convincing 4-1 result, efficient finishing, and several records matched or broken, the United States opened the 2026 World Cup campaign with both authority and control, while Paraguay’s young side gained valuable tournament experience.
