The United States men's national team (USMNT) faced a setback in their preparations for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, losing 2-1 to Turkiye in an international friendly. This defeat marked their third consecutive loss across all competitions, following earlier setbacks against Panama and Mexico in the Nations League. The team is set to play Switzerland next before starting their Gold Cup campaign against Trinidad and Tobago.
Before the match began, Mauricio Pochettino had to adjust his lineup due to the absence of key players like Christian Pulisic. As a result, eight Major League Soccer (MLS) players were included in the starting eleven for a match against UEFA opposition outside the usual December and January camps for the first time since May 2003. Despite these changes, Jack McGlynn gave the USA an early lead with a goal just 59 seconds into the game.

Turkiye responded swiftly after falling behind. Kenan Yildiz set up Arda Guler in the 18th minute, but Guler missed from close range. However, he soon equalised in unusual circumstances when Johnny Cardoso's clearance deflected off him and went past Matt Freese. Just three minutes later, Kerem Akturkoglu scored after Oguz Aydin's cross was blocked into his path.
After halftime, the USMNT improved and created opportunities to level the score. Max Arfsten came close with a header from Luca de la Torre's cross, while Malik Tillman's shot was saved by Berke Ozer following good play by substitute Tyler Adams. Despite growing confidence and searching for an equaliser, they couldn't find the back of the net.
Turkiye nearly extended their lead nine minutes before full-time when Baris Alper Yilmaz shot wide after Tillman lost possession cheaply during a counterattack. The USA had started strongly with McGlynn's early goal being their fastest ever against UEFA opposition, but Turkiye's quick goals turned the game around.
Despite losing, there were some positives for Pochettino to consider. The USMNT registered an expected goals (xG) total of 1.08 from ten shots in the second half compared to Turkiye's xG of 0.21 from two attempts after halftime. This indicates that while they struggled defensively, they created more scoring opportunities as they pushed forward.
The USMNT will look to build on these positives as they prepare for upcoming matches against Switzerland and Trinidad and Tobago. With adjustments needed in defence and finishing chances crucial for success, Pochettino will aim to refine his team's performance ahead of their Gold Cup opener.
