Uruguay vs Cabo Verde: Federico Vinas Helps Injured Opponent with Cramp, Suddenly Leaves Him Midway

In a dramatic Group H clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Uruguay and Cabo Verde shared a thrilling 2-2 draw at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on June 21.

The World Cup debutants put up a stellar show yet again, snatching a point against the two-time World Champions.

Uruguay vs Cabo Verde Federico Vinas Leaves Injured Opponent Midway while Helping him Stretch

Cabo/Cape Verde stunned the two-time world champions by taking the lead in the 21st minute. Kevin Pina scored the nation's first-ever World Cup goal with a powerful, curling direct free-kick. Uruguay responded late in the first half, but not before a memorable sequence unfolded near the Cape Verde box. And just before the Uruguay equalizer, a bizarre and hilarious thing unfolded.

With Cabo Verde midfielder Telmo Arcanjo down with cramp, Uruguay forward Federico Vinas initially stopped to assist the injured player, appearing to anticipate a stoppage in play. He was stretching the Cape Verde player on the pitch.

But his teammates pressed forward without interruption, Vinas released Arcanjo's leg and sprinted into the attacking move. A cross from the left was delivered into the area, where Cape Verde defender Sidny Lopes Cabral attempted a clearance. His header deflected toward his own goal, striking the right post before rebounding across the face of the goal. Maximiliano Araújo was perfectly positioned to tap the ball into the empty net, equalizing in the 44th minute.

Uruguay also took the lead before the break, but Cabo Verde came back to find an equalizer, thus forcing the draw.
