USA Beats Brazil 1-0 To Win Historic Fifth Olympic Gold In Women's Football

In a landmark match at the Olympics, Mallory Swanson scored on her 100th cap, securing the USA's fifth Olympic gold in women's football with a 1-0 victory over Brazil.

Mallory Swanson celebrated her 100th cap by scoring the decisive goal as the United States triumphed over Brazil 1-0, securing their fifth Olympic gold in women’s football. Brazil, who have been runners-up twice, were aiming for their first gold but had an early goal by Ludmila disallowed for offside.

Swanson showcased her speed shortly after but couldn't beat Lorena, resulting in a goalless first half. Early in the second half, Brazil faced a setback when Vitoria Yaya was stretchered off. Swanson then seized her opportunity, scoring from Korbin Albert's through ball at the 57-minute mark.

USA Wins Fifth Olympic Gold

The Chicago Red Stars forward maintained her position well and calmly slotted past Lorena to give the USA the lead. Despite few clear chances, Brazil nearly forced extra-time when Adriana's header was saved by Alyssa Naeher in stoppage time.

This victory marks the USA's fifth Olympic gold in women's football, extending their record and placing them four titles ahead of Germany, Canada, and Norway. The win comes 12 years after their last Olympic success in London.

Swanson had narrowly missed a dramatic goal on her 99th cap during the USA's 1-0 extra-time win over Mexico in the semifinals. However, she made up for it by scoring her fourth goal of the tournament on her milestone appearance.

Youngest to Reach 100 Caps

The 26-year-old Swanson is now the 44th player in USWNT history to reach 100 caps and is the youngest to do so since Amy Rodriguez achieved it at age 25 in 2012.

"The script is scripting Mal scores her team-leading 4th goal of the Olympics to put us ahead in the Gold Medal Match – her 100th cap," tweeted U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (@USWNT) on August 10, 2024.

Brazil had hoped to change their fortunes with an early lead at Parc des Princes but were thwarted by an offside call against Ludmila. Swanson’s pace created another chance soon after, though neither side managed a breakthrough before halftime.

The Selecao’s hopes dimmed further when Vitoria Yaya left the field injured early in the second half. Swanson capitalised on this moment to score what would be the match-winning goal.

The game saw limited clear-cut opportunities, with Adriana’s late header being one of Brazil’s best chances. However, Naeher’s crucial save ensured that Emma Hayes' team clinched gold.

This victory not only highlights Swanson's individual achievement but also underscores the dominance of USWNT in Olympic women’s football history.
