Sophia Smith's extra-time goal secured the United States a spot in the Olympic Games final with a 1-0 victory over Germany on Tuesday. Mallory Swanson was denied a winner during regular time, and despite Germany's efforts for a late equaliser, Emma Hayes will lead the USA in her first tournament as head coach.
Swanson turned provider five minutes into extra time, setting up Smith who timed her run perfectly. Smith darted behind the defence and beat Berger with a powerful shot. This goal marked Smith's third in the competition, showcasing her top form throughout the Olympics.

In the 86th minute, Swanson thought she had scored a late winner when she latched onto Trinity Rodman's through ball and drilled her shot into the bottom corner. However, the offside flag denied her goal. Despite this setback, Swanson remained pivotal in extra time.
Unlike their group-stage encounter where the USA won 4-1, Germany almost took an early lead this time. Alyssa Naeher reacted quickly to push Jule Brand's low shot wide. Germany continued to press but couldn't find the back of the net.
There was late drama as Naeher brilliantly saved Laura Freigang's close-range header. At the other end, Berger denied Smith a second goal with quick thinking. The match remained tense until the final whistle.
This victory propels the USA into their 11th major tournament final. Smith has now scored in three consecutive appearances against Germany, following Abby Wambach’s record of five straight from 2009-12. The win also adds to Germany’s familiar heartache, marking their 10th knockout round elimination in major tournaments by the USA.
The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team celebrated their achievement on social media with an enthusiastic post: "WE'RE PLAYING FOR GOLD! WE'RE PLAYING FOR GOLD! WE'RE PLAYING FOR GOLD! WE'RE PLAYING FOR GOLD! WE'RE PLAYING FOR GOLD!"

Mallory Swanson was instrumental throughout the match despite not scoring herself. Her assist for Smith’s goal highlighted her crucial role in the team’s success.
Emma Hayes’ leadership has been significant in guiding the team to this stage. Her tactical decisions and player management have paid off, leading to a successful campaign so far.
The USA now looks forward to competing for gold, aiming to add another title to their illustrious history in women's soccer.
