USA striker Folarin Balogun Sees Red Card Overturned, set to play against Belgium
In a dramatic twist ahead of the World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash, Folarin Balogun has been given the green light to play for the United States against Belgium.
FIFA's judicial body has suspended the one-match ban stemming from his controversial red card, as it was confirmed by The Athletic on Sunday.

The 25-year-old forward was shown a straight red in the second half of Wednesday's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. While chasing a ball along the left touchline, Balogun extended to adjust his positioning and inadvertently caught defender Tarik Muharemović, with his studs grazing down the calf and onto the ankle. On-field referee Raphael Claus reviewed the challenge via the pitchside monitor following VAR intervention and dismissed Balogun for serious foul play.
Normally, such a sending-off triggers an automatic suspension under tournament rules. FIFA officials had initially indicated that appeals against red cards or the standard one-game ban were not possible. Yet the governing body invoked Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code, which empowers its judicial panel to suspend the enforcement of sanctions-fully or partially. Should Balogun commit a comparable offense during the probation window, the original punishment would immediately take effect, alongside any new penalties.
This outcome mirrors precedents like Cristiano Ronaldo's case, where portions of a multi-game ban were held in abeyance on probation.Balogun enters the Belgium fixture in strong form. He has started nearly every game for the co-hosts and delivered at least one goal contribution in each outing.
His first-half strike against Bosnia helped set up the win, completed by Malik Tillman's free-kick despite the numerical disadvantage. The red card drew sharp backlash.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino dismissed it outright: "For me? Never a red card. Never an intention to step on the player. It was a normal action in football that happened by accident."
Teammate Christian Pulisic called the decision "so unfortunate" and "harsh," assuring Balogun of the squad's full backing.
Monday night's matchup at Lumen Field in Seattle now looks considerably brighter for the Americans. With their leading attacker available, the USMNT will chase a quarterfinal berth for the first time since 2002 against a talented Belgian side. The development underscores the nuances in FIFA's disciplinary process and delivers a timely lift to American hopes in front of a home crowd.
