Natal (Brazil), June 17: The United States displayed a magnificent game to defeat a determined Ghana 2-1 in their opening game in Group G of the 2014 Fifa World Cup at the Arena das Dunas here on Monday.

The victory was even more sweeter for the Americans for they had lost to the African side in the second round of the 2010 edition and by the same margin.

The Americans, coached by former German great Jurgen Klinsmann, took an incredible lead in the 32nd second of the match when captain Clint Dempsey scored. The score remained the same at the interval.

The USA took a sweet revenge of the 1-2 loss to Ghana in the 2010 WC

The Ghanaians had the USA on the ropes for most part of the second half and equalized via Andre Ayew in the 82nd minute.

But the supporters of Ghana couldn't relish the comeback for long as John Brooks Junior, who substituted Matt Besler at half-time, dashed the Africans' hopes by netting his team's second goal in the 86th minute. Ghana had full 89 minutes to pull the first one back but four minutes were too little for them to register another comeback.

This victory took the USA second in the table after Germany who routed Portugal 4-0 earlier in the day. The USA will have its task cut out still with matches against Germany and Portugal left, but the three points secured today will do its confidence a world of good.

As for Ghana, the road will be much stiffer from here on. They meet the Germans next in Fortaleza on June 21.
