The White Wolves made their Asian Cup debut in 1996, winning their first game against China. However, they could not build on that success in their next games, and in this particular encounter, Japan defeated them.
However, in spite of their dismal start to the Asian Cup, Uzbekistan have established themselves as a reliable competitor, earning a spot in each subsequent round. The most noteworthy Asian Cup performance for Uzbekistan came in 2011, when they lost to Australia in the semifinals and finished fourth. However, despite their success on the continent, they have not been able to qualify for the World Cup, failing in their eight efforts.
The team captained by Srecko Katanec comes into this tournament riding high after a strong qualification campaign that saw them win all three of their games against the Maldives, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. In their last six games across all competitions, they have also not lost, winning five and just drawing one.
