Federico Valverde's Hat-Trick Delivers Dominance As Real Madrid Down Manchester City

Federico Valverde starred with a first-half hat-trick to lift Real Madrid over Manchester City in the Champions League last-16. Arbeloa likened Valverde to a club great, emphasising his versatility and team spirit as Madrid controlled the tie from the outset.

Federico Valverde delivered a ruthless first-half hat-trick against Manchester City, prompting strong praise from Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa. The Uruguayan midfielder struck three times in just 22 minutes, putting Madrid in a dominant position in their Champions League last-16 tie and underlining Valverde's growing importance in a side missing Kylian Mbappe through injury.

Arbeloa highlighted Valverde's performance and character, linking both to Real Madrid's identity and history. "It doesnt matter where you put him, I almost get tired of talking to him, Arbeloa told Movistar+. Hes the Juanito of the 21st century. Everything a Real Madrid player should be is Valverde; he deserves a night like this." The coach stressed Valverde's versatility and mentality as key strengths.

Valverde's Hat-Trick Seals Madrid Victory

Valverde's three goals against Manchester City carried major statistical weight in Champions League history. The treble made Valverde only the fifth player to score a first-half hat-trick in a Champions League knockout match, and just the second to do it against an English team, after Lionel Messi achieved the feat for Barcelona against Arsenal in April 2010.

Those earlier first-half hat-tricks in the knockout rounds came from elite forwards across different eras. Lionel Messi did so in 2010 against Arsenal, Robert Lewandowski repeated it in 2022 versus Red Bull Salzburg, Erling Haaland followed in 2023 against RB Leipzig, and Anthony Gordon recorded his this season against Qarabag, before Valverde joined that exclusive group.

Before this match, Valverde had scored the same number of Champions League goals, three, across 75 appearances in the competition. That context gave extra weight to the display against Manchester City. The first goal also ended a sequence of 27 Champions League games without scoring, with Valverde's previous strike in the tournament also coming against Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu in April 2024.

Arbeloa used Valverde in a more advanced right-wing role, a shift from Valverde's usual midfield duties. The decision helped cover for the absence of Kylian Mbappe, while underlining how Valverde adapts across positions. Arbeloa relied on that flexibility to balance Madrid's attack and defensive structure against a strong Manchester City side.

Valverde pointed to collective spirit as a key factor behind the display. "We have to treat each other like brothers, defend each other, help each other, watch each other's backs, Valverde told Movistar+. You can tell if the team is united; if we work together, we can achieve great things. We were tired in the last few minutes, but the team kept working." The comments reflected Madrid's effort without Mbappe.

Personal emotion also featured strongly in Valverde's reaction to the hat-trick and the broader season. "Incredible, you dream of nights like this. Thanks to my team-mates for their trust, to the coaching staff, and to the fans, despite the difficult season, Valverde added." The player focused on support from inside the squad and from the stands during a demanding campaign.

When asked to judge the performance, Valverde did not hesitate, especially given the goals involved. "Yes, definitely, especially in terms of goals. I really enjoyed it. It had been a long time since I'd enjoyed myself like this. Happy, joyful, for the team's victory." The display against Manchester City placed Valverde's Champions League record in a new light and strengthened Madrid's position in the tie.
