Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk believes Dominik Szoboszlai has the qualities to captain the club in future years. Szoboszlai, aged 25, has quickly become a key figure since joining before the 2023-24 season and has impressed teammates with leadership traits, versatility on the pitch, and consistent output in both domestic and European competitions.
Asked about Szoboszlai possibly wearing the armband one day, Van Dijk gave a cautious but positive response. Van Dijk said: "That's all on the manager I think. I don't know. Yeah. Obviously, he has been very good. He's also a player who I think can still make the next step in terms of being a leader for this team."

Szoboszlai played a major part in Liverpool’s 2023-24 Premier League title success after arriving at Anfield that summer. Liverpool also reached the EFL Cup final in that campaign, losing to Newcastle United, and Szoboszlai’s high-intensity pressing, creativity and set-piece delivery were seen as central to Arne Slot’s tactical approach.
Across all competitions this season, the Hungary international has recorded 10 goals and seven assists from 35 appearances. Only Hugo Ekitike has been involved in more Liverpool goals, registering 15 goals and four assists. Szoboszlai has also covered at right-back when needed, which underlines the tactical trust placed in the midfielder by Slot and the coaching staff.

Off the pitch, Liverpool are reported to be negotiating improved terms with Szoboszlai, whose present contract runs until the summer of 2028. Real Madrid have been linked with a possible move, but Szoboszlai’s representative, Matyas Esterhazy, stated earlier in the week that they were "not looking outside or elsewhere."
Within the squad structure, there could be further change in the leadership group, with vice-captain Andrew Robertson possibly leaving when the current deal ends at the close of this season. That potential vacancy has increased discussion around future captains and strengthened focus on Szoboszlai’s influence in the dressing room, training ground environment and matchday situations.
Van Dijk feels Szoboszlai is already setting standards on the pitch while still having room to evolve as a leader. Van Dijk said: "It starts by leading by example and that's something he has done so far this season. But also everything around it; there is still progress to be made and that's a good thing in my opinion, so hopefully he will be very important for the years to come at Liverpool."
Despite Szoboszlai’s personal form, Liverpool have struggled for consistency, currently sitting sixth in the league and 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. Even so, Van Dijk’s comments, combined with contract talks and external interest, underline Szoboszlai’s growing importance in the squad’s present and likely future leadership plans at Anfield.
